Meanwhile Henry, k<strong>in</strong>g of England, sent Hugh, bishop of<br />

Durham, and certa<strong>in</strong> others of his friends both clergy and laymen<br />

to William, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, to collect tithes from his land.<br />

For [William] had offered to his lord the k<strong>in</strong>g of England<br />

before he sailed across 3 four thousand marks of silver to have<br />

his castles aga<strong>in</strong>. And the k<strong>in</strong>g of England replied that the<br />

matter should go well if he granted him a tithe from his land.<br />

And the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> was desirous of satisfy<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

requests, and granted. him the tithe which he asked for, if he<br />

could <strong>in</strong>duce his vassals to do <strong>this</strong>.<br />

When t<strong>here</strong>fore the aforesaid bishop of Durham and the<br />

other messengers of the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of England came to Lothian<br />

to the place which is called Birgham, to speak with the k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Scots about collect<strong>in</strong>g the tithes <strong>in</strong> his land, the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots<br />

himself with almost all the bishops and earls and barons of his<br />
