So by authority of these letters, when the time approached<br />

which had been fixed by the chief pontiff for the aforesaid<br />

bishops of Dunkeld and of St. Andrews to go to Rome, Joscel<strong>in</strong>,<br />

bishop of Glasgow, and his colleagues summoned the aforesaid<br />

bishops, once, twice, three times, to set out on their<br />

journey. And the bishop of Dunkeld set out, but the bishop<br />

of St. Andrews passed the term appo<strong>in</strong>ted for him and delayed<br />

to go. And the aforesaid delegated judges suspended him<br />

from episcopal office, and t<strong>here</strong>after, because of his disobedience,<br />

excommunicated him accord<strong>in</strong>g to the form of the<br />

apostolic mandate.<br />

Meanwhile 3 t<strong>here</strong> came to England Richard, viscount of<br />

Beaumont, and his wife, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with them their daughter,<br />

whom the k<strong>in</strong>g had promised to William k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> marriage. And when their arrival was made known to<br />

the lord k<strong>in</strong>g he received them with honour, and as befits<br />

royal Excellence.<br />

And after a few days the k<strong>in</strong>g caused to assemble at<br />

Woodstock Baldw<strong>in</strong>, archbishop of Canterbury, and John of<br />

Norwich, and Geoffrey of Ely, and Reg<strong>in</strong>ald bishop of Bath,<br />

and very many both earls and barons of the k<strong>in</strong>gdom of<br />

England. Thither came also William, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

and David his brother ; and Joscel<strong>in</strong>, bishop of Glasgow,<br />

and several earls and barons of the k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

And when they were assembled, the lord k<strong>in</strong>g came and<br />

cel<strong>in</strong>, bishop of Glasgow, and the abbots of Melrose, Newbattle and Dunferml<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

It conta<strong>in</strong>s also <strong>this</strong> sentence :<br />

" Lest t<strong>here</strong>fore the aforesaid<br />

matter rema<strong>in</strong> longer <strong>in</strong> suspense, and the church of St. Andrews through<br />

<strong>this</strong> <strong>in</strong>cur loss of her substance, we command your Discretion by apostolic<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>gs and charge you <strong>in</strong> virtue of obedience that you be careful to report<br />

to us, under protection of your seals, all that you <strong>can</strong> know, either of yourselves<br />

or through others, of the progress of <strong>this</strong> affair, so that, <strong>in</strong>structed by<br />

your <strong>in</strong>formation, we may proceed as we ought to proceed <strong>in</strong> the matter<br />
