Of the peace and security made between the k<strong>in</strong>g of England<br />

and the k<strong>in</strong>g and k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>Scotland</strong>, and Roland of Galloway.<br />

But [Roland] refused to come with them.<br />

[K<strong>in</strong>g Henry] sent for him aga<strong>in</strong> the same messengers,<br />

and with them Hugh, bishop of Durham, and Ranulf de<br />

Glanville the justiciar. And they gave hostages to Roland<br />

aforesaid, and the surety was given him of safe-conduct <strong>in</strong><br />

go<strong>in</strong>g and com<strong>in</strong>g, and they brought him to the k<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

Carlisle.<br />

And he made peace with the lord k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> fashion,<br />

that the land which belonged to Utred Fergus' son his father<br />

should rema<strong>in</strong> for him undisturbed, even as [Utred] had it<br />

on the day when he was alive and dead. And as for the<br />

land which belonged to Gilbert Fergus' son, his uncle, and<br />

which Dun<strong>can</strong> son of Gilbert aforesaid claimed <strong>in</strong> opposition<br />

to him, he should come to justice <strong>in</strong> the court of the lord<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of England, at his summons.<br />

And Roland took an oath upon the observation of these<br />

agreements, and gave his three sons as hostages. He swore<br />

also fealty to the k<strong>in</strong>g of England and to his heirs, by command<br />

of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, aga<strong>in</strong>st all men.<br />

William, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, swore also, and David his<br />

brother, and all the earls and barons of <strong>Scotland</strong>, that if<br />

Roland retracted from the aforesaid convention and from<br />

[fealty to] the k<strong>in</strong>g of England, they would hold faithfully<br />

with the k<strong>in</strong>g of England to the confusion of <strong>this</strong> Roland until<br />

he made compensation t<strong>here</strong>for to the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of England.<br />

And Joscel<strong>in</strong>, bishop of Glasgow, promised before all<br />

the word of truth and the relics of the sa<strong>in</strong>ts that unless<br />

upon<br />

Roland upheld the aforesaid convention unaltered he would<br />

pronounce the sentence of excommunication upon him and<br />

upon his land.<br />

bishop of Dunkeld, pope Urban had heard what was pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />

between John and Hugh, bishop of St. Andrews, he wrote<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> form to the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> :<br />
