k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>Scotland</strong>. And the lord k<strong>in</strong>g received them with<br />

honour, and kept them about him for several days and showed<br />

himself sufficiently k<strong>in</strong>d and friendly to them <strong>in</strong> order ;<br />

that<br />

<strong>in</strong> an affair of <strong>this</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d he might <strong>in</strong>fluence their m<strong>in</strong>ds to<br />

his aims. For at last he addressed the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

himself <strong>in</strong> these words: "The many merits of thy prede-<br />

cessors urge, and the nearness of our relationship especially<br />

impels, and the affection of k<strong>in</strong>dness compels me to receive<br />

thee <strong>in</strong>to fuller favour of love. Hence it is that we spoke<br />

long ago of my niece, daughter of the duke of if Saxony, she<br />

might be married to thee. And s<strong>in</strong>ce the usage of Christian<br />

law does not permit it, because of the nearness of consan-<br />

gu<strong>in</strong>ity, I will give thee as wife a certa<strong>in</strong> cous<strong>in</strong> of m<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

namely Ermengard, daughter of Richard, viscount of Beaumont,<br />

the grandson L of my most beloved lord and grandfather<br />

Henry, k<strong>in</strong>g of England, with the fulness of my love<br />

and friendship."<br />

Hear<strong>in</strong>g these words of the lord k<strong>in</strong>g, William, k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>, took counsel with his friends, and at last agreed.<br />

And thus surety was given on either side regard<strong>in</strong>g these<br />

agreements, and the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of England sent his messengers<br />

for his cous<strong>in</strong> aforesaid.<br />

And after a few days, after receiv<strong>in</strong>g from the aforesaid<br />

earls and barons of <strong>Scotland</strong> surety of their preserv<strong>in</strong>g faith<br />

with him, and after tak<strong>in</strong>g hostages from them, he sent them<br />

to their land, and <strong>in</strong>structed them to subdue Roland, son of<br />

Utred, unless he would come to his court and stand before<br />

the law for <strong>this</strong>, that contrary to [Henry's] prohibition and<br />

to that of his justiciars he had entered with hostile force the<br />

land of Gilbert Fergus' son, and of the other barons of Gallo-<br />

way, and had occupied or conquered it, subjugat<strong>in</strong>g it to<br />

himself.<br />

And when the aforesaid Roland had heard <strong>this</strong>, he collected<br />

a numerous host of horse and foot and obstructed the<br />

entrances to Galloway and its roads to what extent he could,<br />

the roads felled and half-hewn trees.<br />
