And <strong>in</strong> the same week <strong>in</strong> which the k<strong>in</strong>g landed <strong>in</strong> England,<br />

a certa<strong>in</strong> founta<strong>in</strong> of runn<strong>in</strong>g water changed <strong>in</strong>to blood, near<br />

the church 6f St. V<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong> 4 <strong>in</strong> the western region of the land<br />

of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, below Cunn<strong>in</strong>gham, not far from the<br />

castle of Irv<strong>in</strong>e and it flowed with ;<br />

pure blood for eight days<br />

and as many nights<br />

without <strong>in</strong>termission.<br />

And the <strong>in</strong>habitants said that a like portent was wont to<br />

happen t<strong>here</strong> before the spill<strong>in</strong>g of blood ; but that never<br />

before had flowed so long the runn<strong>in</strong>g of blood.<br />

Meanwhile, the arrival of the k<strong>in</strong>g of 5<br />

England be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

made known, William, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, who had just<br />

collected his army to subdue Gilbert Fergus' son and the<br />

other Welsh * who had wasted his land and sla<strong>in</strong> his vassals,<br />

and yet would not make peace with him, allowed his army<br />

to go home.<br />

And so quickly as he could he came to speak with his<br />

lord the k<strong>in</strong>g of England, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with him Hugh, bishop<br />

of St. Andrews, and many of the noblest of his land, both<br />

clergy and laymen.<br />

And he was received with honour by the lord k<strong>in</strong>g Henry,<br />
