England ; and summon<strong>in</strong>g Silvan, abbot of Rievaulx, his<br />

colleague, he went to the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

And after a very long discussion with him about the mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of peace between him and John bishop of St. Andrews and<br />

Hugh regard<strong>in</strong>g the episcopate of St. Andrews, it was at last<br />

arranged <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> fashion, that Hugh<br />

should renounce the<br />

bishopric of St. Andrews ; that likewise John also should<br />

quit-claim the episcopate from his pretension, and <strong>in</strong> place<br />

of it should have the bishopric of Dunkeld, and all his revenues<br />

which he had before the bishopric and his election, and the<br />

chancellorship of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, and forty marks of<br />

revenue dur<strong>in</strong>g his life from the episcopate of St. Andrews ;<br />

and that the k<strong>in</strong>g should permit all his relatives and<br />

friends who were <strong>in</strong> exile because of love for him, to return<br />

to their own, and all their chattels to be returned to<br />

them.<br />

But when it came to the hear<strong>in</strong>g of bishop Hugh aforesaid<br />

what had proceeded from the council and will of the k<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

that he should renounce the bishopric of St. Andrews, he<br />

went to the k<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>formed him that he would prefer, if<br />

it pleased the k<strong>in</strong>g, to go to the Roman pontiff, and undergo<br />

sentence accord<strong>in</strong>g to what should be determ<strong>in</strong>ed by him,<br />

rather than lose <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> way by <strong>in</strong>tervention of a barga<strong>in</strong><br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g of his right. 1<br />

And upon the k<strong>in</strong>g's agree<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>this</strong> plan the aforesaid<br />

Hugh denounced as false the letters which bishop John had<br />

acquired from the chief pontiff aga<strong>in</strong>st him, and appealed to<br />

the audience of the lord pope.<br />

This be<strong>in</strong>g done, the elect of Dol and the abbot of Rievaulx<br />

fixed a term 2 for the aforesaid bishops to go to the Roman<br />

pontiff and stand by his judgment. And when <strong>this</strong> was<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished, each returned to his own land.<br />

And hence the aforesaid Roland and abbot Silvan, not<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g able to proceed as they ought, wrote <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> form to<br />
