of York pronounced the sentence of excommunication<br />

upon the person of the aforesaid k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> ; and he<br />

and Hugh of Durham, by mandate of Alexander, chief pontiff,<br />

<strong>in</strong>terdicted the whole land of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, on <strong>this</strong><br />

side of the sea and beyond ; command<strong>in</strong>g the bishops and<br />

abbots, priors and other ecclesiastics to uphold that sentence<br />

of <strong>in</strong>terdict firmly and unwaver<strong>in</strong>gly, and scrupulously to<br />

avoid the k<strong>in</strong>g himself as excommunicate.<br />

Meanwhile pope Alexander III weighed down by age and<br />

heavy sickness departed to the Lord, [on the 20th September,<br />

. . . 1181.] And to him <strong>in</strong> the apostolicate succeeded . . .<br />

Saturday, the 21st of November, Roger, arch-<br />

bishop of York] departed from the world. And Hugh, bishop<br />

of Durham, buried his body, . . . William, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g under the sentence of excommunication which the<br />

aforesaid archbishop had pronounced upon him.<br />

And when he heard that Roger, archbishop of York, was<br />

dead, William k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> rejoiced with great joy ;<br />

and hold<strong>in</strong>g a council with the earls and barons 2 of his land<br />

he sent to Rome Joscel<strong>in</strong>, bishop of Glasgow, and Arnold, 3<br />

abbot of Melrose, and other wise and discreet .ecclesiastics of<br />

his k<strong>in</strong>gdom, to Lucius, the chief pontiff, that he himself<br />

should be absolved from the aforesaid sentence of excommunication,<br />

and his land from <strong>in</strong>terdict ; and that if by any<br />

means it could be done, John bishop of St. Andrews should<br />

be deposed.<br />
