While t<strong>here</strong>fore these th<strong>in</strong>gs took place, 2 William, k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>, hear<strong>in</strong>g that the above-named Donald and his<br />

accomplices were wast<strong>in</strong>g his land, received from the lord<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g permission to go home, and returned to his native land.<br />

And as his return was published, Hugh, bishop of Durham,<br />

came to meet him <strong>in</strong> a place called Ravendale, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

him John, bishop of St. Andrews.<br />

And when they had discussed long about mak<strong>in</strong>g peace<br />

between him and the k<strong>in</strong>g, and could not be agreed between<br />

them, John, bishop of St. Andrews, pronounced the sentence<br />

of excommunication upon Richard de Moreville, the constable,<br />

and Richard de Prebenda, and other friends of the k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>, because they had disturbed the peace.<br />

And Hugh, bishop of Durham, by the authority which he<br />

wielded of Alexander the chief pontiff commanded the prior<br />

of St. Andrews and the other ecclesiastics hold<strong>in</strong>g office <strong>in</strong><br />

the bishopric of St. Andrews to come to John, their bishop,<br />

and to offer him the reverence of due subjection ; <strong>in</strong>timat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to them that he would pronounce the sentence of <strong>in</strong>terdict<br />

upon the disobedient and rebellious.<br />

Likewise Roger, archbishop of York, legate <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

commanded the bishops and other ecclesiastics hold<strong>in</strong>g office<br />

throughout the k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>Scotland</strong> to lay all pretext aside<br />

and come to the aforesaid John, bishop of St. Andrews, and<br />

offer to him and to his<br />

that he usurped to himself their possessions, and sent them<br />

with their sons and relatives, and even those who still were<br />

carried at their mothers' breasts or wailed <strong>in</strong> the cradle, to<br />

miserable proscription and exile.<br />

But when Roger, archbishop of York, and Hugh, bishop<br />

of Durham, saw the miserable proscription and exile of the<br />

aforesaid, they proceeded <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> affair accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />
