"Bishop Alexander, servant of the servants of God, to<br />

William, illustrious k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, greet<strong>in</strong>g and apostolic<br />

benediction.<br />

" We remember to have laboured with solicitude for thy<br />

peace and liberty, hop<strong>in</strong>g that from <strong>this</strong> thou shouldst be<br />

stronger and shouldst <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> devotion to the apostolic<br />

see, and shouldst more gladly preserve ecclesiastic liberty.<br />

But learn<strong>in</strong>g of the case of our venerable brother John, bishop<br />

of St. Andrews of <strong>Scotland</strong>, (be pleased to be attentive still,)<br />

we are compelled to th<strong>in</strong>k the opposite of the hope which we<br />

have of the fervour of thy royal devotion.<br />

Yet wish<strong>in</strong>g still to learn <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> if our patience may<br />

lead thy royal mood to penitence, we warn thy Greatness<br />

very earnestly by apostolic writ<strong>in</strong>gs, and command that thou<br />

bestow peace and security upon the above-mentioned with<strong>in</strong><br />

twenty days after the receipt of <strong>this</strong>, so that he need not fear<br />

the royal <strong>in</strong>dignation.<br />

" Otherwise, know that we have commanded our venerable<br />

brother Roger, archbishop of York, legate<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> of<br />

the apostolic see, to place thy k<strong>in</strong>gdom under <strong>in</strong>terdict, no<br />

appeal avail<strong>in</strong>g ; to pronounce the sentence of excommunication<br />

upon if thy person, thou refuse to desist.<br />

Be certa<strong>in</strong> also that, if thou th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> thy violence to be<br />

obdurate, even as we have laboured that thy k<strong>in</strong>gdom should<br />

return <strong>in</strong>to its<br />

have freedom, so shall we study that it may<br />

former subjection." 1<br />

Moreover pope Alexander commanded the aforesaid<br />

Alexius to summon Roger, archbishop of York, legate <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> of the apostolic see, and with him to carry out the<br />

command ; and to <strong>in</strong>struct urgently lord Henry ; k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

England, to constra<strong>in</strong> by his royal authority William, k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>Scotland</strong>, to permit the aforesaid John to possess <strong>in</strong> peace<br />

the bishopric of St. Andrews. 2<br />

And the same pope granted to the aforesaid archbishop<br />

Roger the office of legate <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, and commanded him<br />

that he and Hugh, bishop of Durham, should pronounce the<br />

sentence of excommunication upon William, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots,<br />

letter is <strong>in</strong> Hoved., ii, 211-212. It is t<strong>here</strong> placed after that<br />

given by B. of P. below after ; Roger's be<strong>in</strong>g made legate, and the warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

given to John Scott.<br />
