T<strong>here</strong> came to England also a certa<strong>in</strong> other messenger of the<br />

chief pontiff, one named Peter of St. Agatha. And to him had<br />

been <strong>in</strong>trusted the charge of summon<strong>in</strong>g the ecclesiastics of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>, of Galloway and of the Isle of Man, and also of Ire-<br />

land, as well archbishops as bishops and abbots and priors, by<br />

force of obedience to gather at Rome <strong>in</strong> the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />

fast to the aforesaid council. 2<br />

And he, when he sought of Henry k<strong>in</strong>g of England permission<br />

to pass through his k<strong>in</strong>gdom, swore that he would return<br />

through the same, and that he would essay no evil aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

his k<strong>in</strong>gdom, England, <strong>in</strong> his legation.<br />

And the archbishops and bishops of Ireland and <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

when <strong>in</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g they visited the k<strong>in</strong>g of England, sett<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

for Rome, swore touch<strong>in</strong>g the sacred Evangels that neither <strong>in</strong><br />

go<strong>in</strong>g nor <strong>in</strong> return<strong>in</strong>g would they seek the <strong>in</strong>jury of the k<strong>in</strong>g-<br />

and that they would visit the k<strong>in</strong>g on their<br />

dom or the k<strong>in</strong>g ;<br />

of England, son of Matilda the empress, held his court on the<br />

day of the birth of the Lord, which was the third day of the<br />

week, at Nott<strong>in</strong>gham ;<br />

and present at <strong>this</strong> feast was William,<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, 4 and the earls and barons of the k<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />
