of the Roman pontiff, whether you owe subjection to him<br />

by metropolitan right. And we have needfully warned the<br />

aforesaid k<strong>in</strong>g, reason<strong>in</strong>g with him as we ought aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />

reception of the aforesaid oaths, that he should not compel you<br />

to offer him obedience, nor afford to <strong>this</strong> his consent or favour.<br />

We t<strong>here</strong>fore command your Fraternity and enjo<strong>in</strong> that you<br />

attempt not to obey by metropolitan right any but the Roman<br />

pontiff, by pretext of these oaths or for any other reason, until<br />

<strong>in</strong> our presence, or <strong>in</strong> that of our catholic successor, if the afore-<br />

said archbishop wishes to drag you <strong>in</strong>to court concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong>,<br />

the controversy between you and him be term<strong>in</strong>ated by the due<br />

conclusion.<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g came to Feckenham about the feast of St. Dionysius ;<br />

and t<strong>here</strong> came to him William, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

And he brought with him Gilbert, Fergus' son, who had<br />

sla<strong>in</strong> his brother Utred, as has been said above. And <strong>this</strong><br />

Gilbert made peace with the lord k<strong>in</strong>g for the death of his<br />

brother, who was a relative of the k<strong>in</strong>g and became his ;<br />

man,<br />

and to have his love<br />

and swore to him fealty aga<strong>in</strong>st all men ;<br />

gave<br />

him a thousand marks of silver. 5<br />

And hav<strong>in</strong>g thus made his peace he went home, and commanded<br />

that all foreigners who had any hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Galloway<br />

through the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> should go <strong>in</strong>to exile ; and that<br />

those who refused to consent to <strong>this</strong> decree should undergo<br />
