But Roger de Mowbray, who was t<strong>here</strong> at the time, slipped<br />

away and escaped when the k<strong>in</strong>g was taken, and fled back <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

And our chief men carried away with rejoic<strong>in</strong>g a noble prey,<br />

and returned <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>g to Newcastle, whence <strong>in</strong> the morn-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g they had departed ;<br />

and caused him to be most carefully<br />

guarded at Richmond, so as to send him <strong>in</strong> good time to their<br />

lord the illustrious k<strong>in</strong>g of the English.<br />

This was happily accomplished, by God's favour, <strong>in</strong> the year<br />

from the fulness of time when ihe word was made flesh, 1174,<br />

on the third l before the Ides of July, on a Saturday.<br />

And immediately it was published abroad, and thankfully<br />

heard <strong>in</strong> all the prov<strong>in</strong>ces of the English, with clang<strong>in</strong>g of bells<br />

for solemn joy.<br />

And on the same day, namely the third 3 before the Ides of<br />

July, the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>Scotland</strong> was taken at Alnwick : and on the<br />

Thursday follow<strong>in</strong>g, 4 the rumour that the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> was<br />

taken reached the k<strong>in</strong>g's ears <strong>in</strong> London, w<strong>here</strong> he abode<br />

collect<strong>in</strong>g his army. 5<br />

And when the k<strong>in</strong>g heard it, he rejoiced much with great<br />

joy, and gave thanks for it to God almighty and sa<strong>in</strong>t Thomas<br />

the martyr. And the same day he advanced his army aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

Hunt<strong>in</strong>gdon, and <strong>in</strong>vested it.<br />

And on the Sunday follow<strong>in</strong>g, namely the twelfth 6 before<br />

Malluvel." (" And many other nobles," adds MS. B.) " And many others,<br />

who permitted themselves to be taken of their own accord, that they might<br />
