Thither l came to [k<strong>in</strong>g Henry] William, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

2 and the bishop of the Isles of Man and other thirty-one, which<br />

are between <strong>Scotland</strong> and Ireland and England.<br />

These thirty-two islands the k<strong>in</strong>g of the Isles holds of the<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of Norway <strong>in</strong> such tribute that, when a new k<strong>in</strong>g succeeds,<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g of the Isles gives to him ten marks of gold, and does<br />

naught else for him <strong>in</strong> his whole life, unless aga<strong>in</strong> another k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> Norway.<br />

The bishop aforesaid came to the English k<strong>in</strong>g as legate of<br />

<strong>this</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g of the Isles. 3 For the aforesaid k<strong>in</strong>g is the cous<strong>in</strong> of<br />

the English k<strong>in</strong>g on the side of Matilda the empress, his mother.<br />
