Bishop Alexander, servant of the servants of God, to his<br />

beloved sons the archdeacon, prior, and all the clergy of the<br />

church of St. Andrew, greet<strong>in</strong>g and apostolic benediction.<br />

The petitions which our venerable brother [William,]<br />

bishop of Moray, and our beloved son master Nicholas, have<br />

placed before us concern<strong>in</strong>g your church on behalf of our<br />

dearest son Malcolm, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, would have been gladly<br />

put <strong>in</strong>to effect by us if it could have been done with God and<br />

with justice. And we, desir<strong>in</strong>g with benefit to satisfy the<br />

same k<strong>in</strong>g, our son, have corrected these petitions and have<br />

brought them to a better state, for the reform of the church<br />

and the honour of his realm. For what the same messengers<br />

proposed to us on behalf of the k<strong>in</strong>g could not, as we have<br />

said, be fulfilled <strong>in</strong> justice ; for, while for the present your<br />

church is destitute of a pastor, it was by no means fitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that the confirmation of the church <strong>in</strong> the th<strong>in</strong>gs which were<br />

asked should be made. And the counsel of our brethren<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g been imparted to us, because we see that it accrues<br />
