In these days the card<strong>in</strong>al priest John l landed at Tyne-<br />

mouth <strong>in</strong> Northumbria, be<strong>in</strong>g sent as legate of the apostolic<br />

see with palls for the Irish . . . [bishops.] And he wrote to<br />

David, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, tell<strong>in</strong>g of himself and of the cause<br />

of his arrival, and ask<strong>in</strong>g of him safe conduct <strong>in</strong>to Ireland.<br />

And at that time the k<strong>in</strong>g with his army had confirmed<br />

his nephew William Fitz Dun<strong>can</strong> <strong>in</strong> the honour of Skipton<br />

and Craven, and had stormed a small fort built by the enemy,<br />

and had driven out the knights and destroyed it. T<strong>here</strong> the<br />

Scots s<strong>in</strong>ned <strong>in</strong> robb<strong>in</strong>g churches and for <strong>this</strong> ;<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g made<br />

amends, giv<strong>in</strong>g to each church a silver chalice.<br />

When the k<strong>in</strong>g heard the letter of the lord card<strong>in</strong>al he<br />

hastened to meet him at Carlisle, send<strong>in</strong>g forward his chancellor<br />

to meet him at the church of Hexham for ; t<strong>here</strong> the<br />

card<strong>in</strong>al had been very well received, and with him a certa<strong>in</strong><br />

bishop of Ireland.<br />

When t<strong>here</strong>fore the card<strong>in</strong>al came to him, about the feast<br />

of St. Michael, 2 the k<strong>in</strong>g and his son earl Henry received him<br />

hospitably, and merited his favour by expense and devoted<br />

courtesy.<br />

In the year 1153 the card<strong>in</strong>al priest John, the legate,<br />

after adjust<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ireland the th<strong>in</strong>gs for which he had been<br />

sent, returned after Easter to the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bound to him by a strong feel<strong>in</strong>g of affection because of his<br />

most devoted courtesy of reverence.<br />
