The laws also, both the customs and the statutes, which<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g Henry his uncle had established <strong>in</strong> the earldom of Northumbria,<br />

they were to defend t<strong>here</strong> <strong>in</strong>violably <strong>in</strong> all th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

And <strong>this</strong> agreement was confirmed at Durham, on the fifth 4<br />

before the Ides of April, by Henry, son of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

and by their barons, <strong>in</strong> the presence of Matilda, queen of<br />

England, and of many earls and barons of south England. 5<br />

This also was carefully marked out, that earl Henry was to<br />

have no right over either the land of St. Cuthbert or the land<br />

of St. Andrew of Hexhamshire, because it perta<strong>in</strong>ed to the<br />

archbishopric of York.<br />

T<strong>here</strong>after [earl Henry] set out with the queen to the court<br />

of k<strong>in</strong>g Stephen, and found him at Nott<strong>in</strong>gham ; and after<br />

confirmation by him of what they had done at Durham [Henry]<br />

stayed through the whole summer <strong>in</strong> south England ; and frequent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g's court 6<br />
