was dragged from his horse by an iron hook, and almost captured<br />

Now immediately after the oft-named legate [Alberic] had<br />

departed from England messengers passed between the two<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs, and peace was made <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> wise :<br />

Stephen, k<strong>in</strong>g of England, granted to Henry, son of k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

David of <strong>Scotland</strong>, along with all the lands which he had had<br />

before, the earldom of Northumbria except<strong>in</strong>g two towns,<br />

for these two he kept <strong>in</strong><br />

namely Newcastle and Bamborough ;<br />

his own hands. But for these towns he was to give him cities<br />

to their value <strong>in</strong> south England.<br />

He <strong>in</strong>structed also that the barons who held of the earldom,<br />

as many as would, should acknowledge their lands to be subject<br />

to earl Henry and do him homage, sav<strong>in</strong>g the fealty which<br />

they had sworn to himself. And <strong>this</strong> most of them did.<br />

But the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> and Henry his son, with all their<br />

subjects, thenceforth so long as they lived were to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

at peace with and most loyal to k<strong>in</strong>g Stephen of England <strong>in</strong> all<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs. And that he might be the surer of their loyalty they<br />

were to give him as hostages the son of earl Gospatric, and the<br />
