But the warders of the castle defended themselves manfully<br />

For they sallied forth more frequently than ever from the<br />

castle, and either cut down or burned his eng<strong>in</strong>es, slay<strong>in</strong>g many<br />

men. And hence he now despaired of the possibility of its<br />

But the townsmen broke with mach<strong>in</strong>es his mach<strong>in</strong>es, and<br />

slew many of the k<strong>in</strong>g's men by diverse deaths, and wounded<br />

very many, while los<strong>in</strong>g but one of their own knights.<br />

For he had left the castle and, trust<strong>in</strong>g too greatly <strong>in</strong> his<br />

valour, and t<strong>here</strong>fore rashly bold, was overcome and sla<strong>in</strong> by<br />

a multitude of Scots while<br />

detestable union, the more effectually to atta<strong>in</strong> the desires of<br />

their malevolence. And of <strong>this</strong> execrable company the chiefs<br />

and leaders were Edgar, base-born son of earl Gospatric [of<br />

Dunbar,] and Robert and Utred, sons of Maldred.<br />

Urged by greed, t<strong>here</strong>fore, and encouraged by impunity,<br />

and spurred by madness, they raided through Northumbria<br />

like wolves seek<strong>in</strong>g a prey to devour.<br />

They crossed also the river Tyne, and came <strong>in</strong>to the land of<br />

St. Cuthbert ; but not f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g t<strong>here</strong> ought which they had<br />

power or courage to seize they returned with empty hands.<br />

They t<strong>here</strong>fore carried off the booty which they found <strong>in</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong><br />

vill called Err<strong>in</strong>gton, of the parish of the church of Hexham.<br />

Then after two nights' <strong>in</strong>terval the same marauders<br />

<strong>in</strong>vaded another vill called Diss<strong>in</strong>gton. Now <strong>this</strong> was the vill<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>can</strong>ons of the aforesaid church, and was distant<br />

from Hexham eight miles toward the east. T<strong>here</strong>, then, they<br />

slew three of the servants of the <strong>can</strong>ons, and <strong>in</strong>flicted many<br />
