And without delay assembled to him by his command<br />

the Picts and the Cumbrians and the men of Carlisle and of<br />

the surround<strong>in</strong>g district. When t<strong>here</strong>fore his whole army<br />

was collected he rejoiced with excessive joy, because it seemed<br />

to him abundant and <strong>in</strong>v<strong>in</strong>cible : for <strong>in</strong> truth it was vast,<br />

consist<strong>in</strong>g of more than twenty-six thousand men. And his<br />

heart was uplifted, and his followers' and ; they placed their<br />

trust <strong>in</strong> themselves and <strong>in</strong> their numbers, and had no regard<br />

towards God, but spoke all too unbecom<strong>in</strong>gly and proudly.<br />

And not Yorkshire alone did they purpose and threaten<br />

to depopulate but also the greater part of England. For<br />

they deemed not that any host would venture or be able to<br />

oppose them.<br />

Now these th<strong>in</strong>gs happened with<strong>in</strong> the octaves of the<br />

nativity of St. Mary [Magdalen.] 1 And the k<strong>in</strong>g went past<br />

Durham with his army, and caused the crops to be harried<br />

as far as to the river Tees, and the vills and churches which<br />

he had left untouched on the other occasion to be broken<br />

<strong>in</strong>to, plundered and burned accord<strong>in</strong>g to his custom.<br />

Also cross<strong>in</strong>g the Tees he began to do the same. 2<br />
