T<strong>here</strong>fore k<strong>in</strong>g David came to meet him at Durham, and<br />

was reconciled with him, giv<strong>in</strong>g back to him Newcastle but<br />

Carlisle he kept, by concession of k<strong>in</strong>g Stephen.<br />

Yet k<strong>in</strong>g David did not become k<strong>in</strong>g Stephen's man,<br />

because first of the laymen he had sworn the oath to k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

[Henry's] daughter, his own niece, to uphold England for<br />

her after Henry's death. But k<strong>in</strong>g David's son Henry became<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g Stephen's man, and k<strong>in</strong>g Stephen gave to him<br />

<strong>in</strong> addition the castle which is called Hunt<strong>in</strong>gdon. 2<br />

And return<strong>in</strong>g thence k<strong>in</strong>g [Stephen] held his court at<br />

London <strong>in</strong> Lent on the festival of Easter. . . .<br />

And Stephen obta<strong>in</strong>ed from him without difficulty what<br />

he wished. For [David] was bent both by the mildness of<br />

[Stephen's} manners 3 and by the approach of oJd age, and<br />

gladly yielded to the repose of real or pretended peace. 4<br />

But at last a conference was held <strong>in</strong> that prov<strong>in</strong>ce, and<br />

peace was made between the two k<strong>in</strong>gs, and Henry, son of<br />

David k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, did homage to k<strong>in</strong>g Stephen at<br />

York.<br />

And the k<strong>in</strong>g gave him besides his father's earldom of<br />

Hunt<strong>in</strong>gdon Carlisle and Doncaster, and everyth<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

perta<strong>in</strong>s to them ; and, as some say who testify that they<br />

" K<strong>in</strong>g Stephen met [David] at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the fast at<br />

S. of D., ii, 287 :<br />

Durham, on the nones of February ; and t<strong>here</strong> stayed fifteen days."<br />
