Because he was bishop of no town, at one time adher<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to the bishop of York and aga<strong>in</strong> to the bishop of Durham,<br />

he was supported by them and regarded as the vicar of either<br />

<strong>in</strong> episcopal m<strong>in</strong>istries. 1<br />

By these, then, Robert was consecrated, but was not<br />

allowed by the Scots, so it is said, to make any profession<br />

of any k<strong>in</strong>d of subjection or obedience to the church of York<br />

or to its bishop, although he was a <strong>can</strong>on of York.<br />

Thurstan, by God's grace archbishop of York, to all sons<br />

of holy church, greet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Be it known to all, both present and to come, that I have,<br />

for love of God and of the venerable k<strong>in</strong>g David of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

irregularly 3 consecrated Robert as bishop of St. Andrews,<br />

without profession and obedience, sav<strong>in</strong>g the compla<strong>in</strong>t of<br />

the church of York and the just right of the church of St.<br />

Andrew ; and if ever an archbishop of York wish to speak<br />

i<br />

of God, to his beloved sons <strong>in</strong> Christ, Eiste<strong>in</strong> and Sigurd, k<strong>in</strong>gs of Norway,<br />

greet<strong>in</strong>g and apostolic benediction.<br />

"... T<strong>here</strong>fore, dearest sons <strong>in</strong> Christ, we visit your<br />

affection with<br />

apostolic letters, and ask you, and admonish you <strong>in</strong> the Lord, to receive<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dly our son the bishop of Orkney, elected, as we understand, <strong>can</strong>onically,<br />

and consecrated accord<strong>in</strong>g to the custom of the church by his metropolis of<br />

York ; and to protect him from wrong, and to cause him to rema<strong>in</strong> more<br />

peacefully <strong>in</strong> his episcopate." c\ '!<br />

So also a letter from pope Honorius II to Sigurd of Norway, <strong>in</strong> December<br />

1125: Ra<strong>in</strong>e's York, iii, 50-51: "Bishop Honorius, servant of the<br />

servants of God, to his beloved son <strong>in</strong> Christ, Sigurd, illustrious k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Norway, greet<strong>in</strong>g and apostolic benediction.<br />

It has been brought to our ears that our venerable brother Thomas,<br />

archbishop of York, consecrated Ralph as bishop of Orkney. But afterwards,<br />

as we have learned, another has been <strong>in</strong>truded t<strong>here</strong>. But either<br />

one or none <strong>can</strong> obta<strong>in</strong> the episcopal chair ; and t<strong>here</strong>fore we command thy<br />

Nobility by the present writ<strong>in</strong>gs to restore the episcopal see, Orkney to wit<br />

to Ralph above-named, along with the lands and its other appurtenances, as<br />

to the proper bishop and pastor of that : place and henceforth to keep him<br />

<strong>in</strong> thy care, lest thou <strong>in</strong>cur God's wrath for it.<br />
