In the follow<strong>in</strong>g September k<strong>in</strong>g [Henry I] returned to<br />

England. And on the follow<strong>in</strong>g Christmas our archbishop<br />

[Thurstan] came to the k<strong>in</strong>g's court, <strong>read</strong>y to go thence to<br />

Rome, for the plea which had been fixed <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Lent by the lord pope, as we have said before, between<br />

[Thurstan] and John, bishop of Glasgow, and the bishops<br />

of <strong>Scotland</strong>. . . .<br />

T<strong>here</strong> were then at court David, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, and Conan,<br />

count of Brittany. . . .<br />

After pass<strong>in</strong>g Christmas at W<strong>in</strong>dsor, w<strong>here</strong> the court was,<br />

[Thurstan] came on the morrow to London, expect<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g would come thither on the fifth day, and prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to make the journey [to Rome].<br />

The k<strong>in</strong>g came t<strong>here</strong>, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with him the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots,<br />

and by some provision of agreement between our archbishop<br />

and the bishops of <strong>Scotland</strong>, by a concession also of k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

David, persuaded our [archbishop], who was <strong>read</strong>y to start,<br />

to defer for the present his journey, and to send ambassadors<br />

to Rome, ask<strong>in</strong>g on the k<strong>in</strong>g's behalf and his own that a truce<br />

should be given him <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> case till the second Lent ;<br />

2 and<br />

permission for an agreement between them meanwhile.<br />

The archbishop yielded <strong>this</strong> and sent, and obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>this</strong><br />

truce with difficulty.<br />
