The bishop of Glasgow replied to the compla<strong>in</strong>t of our<br />

archbishop that he had come without be<strong>in</strong>g summoned, but<br />

on an embassy from his lord the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> and so<br />

it was decreed that he ought not now to be compelled to<br />

reply, but that a day should be appo<strong>in</strong>ted for him, and that<br />

some who were not present should be summoned by letters<br />

The [archbishop] of Canterbury and his followers opposed<br />

us to the extent of their power, through hatred roused by<br />

the refusal of profession ; unjustly claim<strong>in</strong>g for themselves<br />

the whole prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Brita<strong>in</strong>, so that the lord pope smiled<br />

and shook his head, and said to one of them, " Brother, have<br />

He determ<strong>in</strong>ed to summon by his letters the bishops of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> for the day appo<strong>in</strong>ted.<br />

And then after Michael's mass 4 David the Scots' k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

came from <strong>Scotland</strong> hither to land, and k<strong>in</strong>g Henry received<br />

him with great honour ;<br />
