Moreover Alexander was sufficiently humble and amiable<br />

to clergy and monks, but to the rest of his subjects beyond<br />

measure terrible ; a man of great heart, apply<strong>in</strong>g himself <strong>in</strong><br />

all th<strong>in</strong>gs beyond his strength. And he was literate, and<br />

most zealous <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g churches, <strong>in</strong> seek<strong>in</strong>g out the<br />

relics of the sa<strong>in</strong>ts, <strong>in</strong> the mak<strong>in</strong>g and regulat<strong>in</strong>g of priestly<br />

robes and holy <strong>book</strong>s ; and also to all visitors most liberal,<br />

beyond his means. And regard<strong>in</strong>g the poor he was so devout<br />

that he seemed <strong>in</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g to have greater delight than <strong>in</strong><br />

receiv<strong>in</strong>g them, wash<strong>in</strong>g, nourish<strong>in</strong>g, and cloth<strong>in</strong>g them.<br />

Now <strong>in</strong> the same year, four months before his death,<br />

Alexander had caused to be elected to the bishopric of the<br />

church of St. Andrews which is <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> Robert, prior of<br />

the regular <strong>can</strong>ons at Scone.<br />

But his ord<strong>in</strong>ation was for a long time deferred, 3 because<br />

of the debt of subjection which, accord<strong>in</strong>g to custom, Thurstan,<br />

archbishop of York, demanded of him. But the Scots on<br />

the other hand said with foolish prat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>this</strong> was not<br />

ow<strong>in</strong>g to be done, accord<strong>in</strong>g to any authority or custom.<br />

And David, youngest of the brothers, by wise decision<br />

shunned the savage <strong>in</strong>vasions of the Scots, and sought the<br />
