the circumstance of the churches requires, let the bishops<br />

elect go reverently to thy metropolitan, to wit the archbishop<br />

of York, and receive consecration either by his hand, or, if<br />

need compels, by his permission.<br />

And <strong>in</strong>deed by apostolic authority we command both<br />

them and thee thyself to obey the archbishop as father and<br />

teacher.<br />

Bishop Calixtus, servant of the servants of God, to his<br />

beloved brothers <strong>in</strong> Christ, all the bishops throughout Scot-<br />

land, suffragans of the church of York, greet<strong>in</strong>g and apostolic<br />

benediction.<br />

We remember that we exhorted you all long ago <strong>in</strong> our<br />

letters to yield honour and obedience to our venerable brother<br />

Thurstan, archbishop of York ; but, as we have been <strong>in</strong>-<br />

to do so.<br />

formed, you have till now neglected<br />

T<strong>here</strong>fore we repeat to you the <strong>in</strong>junction of the apostolic<br />

see and command you to lay aside all pretext and dissimu-<br />

lation and to recognize our brother aforesaid, archbishop of<br />

the church of York, as your metropolitan appo<strong>in</strong>ted over<br />

you, and to show him honour and obedience.<br />

Moreover let the elected of the churches go to him to<br />

receive consecration as to their metropolitan. And let not<br />

one presume to consecrate another without [the metropolitan's]<br />

permission : his consecration also shall be void, and we shall<br />

not be able to forego do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>can</strong>onical justice concern<strong>in</strong>g it,<br />

God support<strong>in</strong>g us.<br />
