Bishop Calixtus, servant of the servants of God, to his<br />

venerable brother John, bishop of Glasgow, greet<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

apostolic benediction.<br />

Thou wert consecrated as bishop by the lord of holy<br />

memory our predecessor, by request<br />

of the church of York.<br />

And w<strong>here</strong>as thou oughtest humbly to have acknowledged<br />

<strong>this</strong> benignity, thou hast, as we learn, been so uplifted with<br />

pride that thou hast refused to offer profession to thy metropolitan,<br />

the archbishop of York, even <strong>in</strong> spite of our command.<br />

Know surely that we <strong>can</strong>not longer endure cont<strong>in</strong>uance<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> contumely w<strong>here</strong>fore with ; repeated command we<br />

order thee as a not ungrateful son to recognize thy mother,<br />

the church of York, <strong>in</strong> whose chapter thou wert elected as<br />

her suffragan and to offer ;<br />

profession to our venerable brother<br />

Thurstan, thy metropolitan.<br />

Otherwise by authority of the Lord we ratify the sentence<br />

which with <strong>can</strong>onical right he has pronounced aga<strong>in</strong>st thee.<br />

illustrious and glorious k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, Alexander, greet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and apostolic benediction.<br />

Because of the presumption of the bishops who are <strong>in</strong><br />

thy realm, and <strong>in</strong> the cause of our venerable brother Thurs-<br />

tan, archbishop of York, we have al<strong>read</strong>y sent thee other<br />

letters but <strong>in</strong> no ;<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>in</strong> so far as we have learned, have<br />

we been obeyed by thee hitherto.<br />

W<strong>here</strong>fore we exhort thy Nobility <strong>in</strong> the Lord by the<br />

visitation of the present letters, and command that thou by<br />

no means permit the bishops of thy realm to consecrate one<br />
