In the same year <strong>in</strong> which Ralph, archbishop of Canterbury,<br />

returned from foreign parts to England, (it was the<br />

1120th year from the <strong>in</strong>carnation of the word of God,) came<br />

to him certa<strong>in</strong> honourable and vigorous men sent by Alexander,<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots. Of these, one was a monk and prior of the<br />

church of Dunferml<strong>in</strong>e, Peter by name ; two were priests,<br />

and one was a knight.<br />

And he who cares to know the busi-<br />

ness of their embassy, let him run through, <strong>read</strong><strong>in</strong>g or hear<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g letter which they brought :<br />

" Alexander, by God's grace k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, to Ralph<br />

archbishop of Canterbury, reverend and with reverence to<br />

be beloved, greet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Hear<strong>in</strong>g sure tid<strong>in</strong>gs of your prosperous arrival <strong>in</strong> England,<br />

long desired by me, I rejoice with you over your safety and<br />

prosperity, and return thanks t<strong>here</strong>for to the highest Protector.<br />

While occupation on all sides with temporal cares<br />

prevents me from travell<strong>in</strong>g so as to be able at present to<br />

enjoy your presence, I wish to declare to your Goodness the<br />

affection of my m<strong>in</strong>d, both by description <strong>in</strong> a letter and<br />

by relation of messengers. For, supported by the advice<br />

of a person of so great prudence, I do not doubt that I shall<br />

be able, with God's favour, excellently to carry through a<br />

good purpose to the performance of a good work.<br />

I wiU not then conceal from your Excellency that the<br />

church of St. Andrew which is <strong>in</strong> my k<strong>in</strong>gdom has for long<br />

lacked pastoral care, and that I wish to comfort its long<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

by the providence of God and of your grace, with a suitable<br />

pastor. W<strong>here</strong>fore I beg the clemency of your mercy, that<br />
