But quarrels <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g between him and the k<strong>in</strong>g prevented<br />

l and through distress<br />

[Turgot] from carry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong> <strong>in</strong>to effect ;<br />

of m<strong>in</strong>d he fell <strong>in</strong>to a melancholy.<br />

And hence he received permission to stay for a while at<br />

Durham, because of his <strong>in</strong>firmity and on the ; vigil of the<br />

apostles Peter and Paul 2 he came to Wearmouth, w<strong>here</strong> for-<br />

merly<br />

he had received from Aidw<strong>in</strong> the monk's habit. And<br />

t<strong>here</strong> he celebrated mass <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g, as well as he could,<br />

and set out for St. 3 Cuthbert and ; tak<strong>in</strong>g to his bed t<strong>here</strong>, was<br />

prepared for his decease by fevers, sometimes mild, sometimes<br />

violent and <strong>this</strong> for two months and four ,<br />

days.<br />

And when the hour of his decease arrived, while he was say-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g, as best he "<br />

could, <strong>in</strong> prayer, In peace was prepared his<br />

the Lord<br />

place and his habitation <strong>in</strong> Zion," 5 and " praise ye<br />

<strong>in</strong> his sanctuary," 6 he expired <strong>in</strong> the hands of the brethren,<br />

on the second 7 before the Kalends of April, the third day of<br />

the week, at the third hour, after complet<strong>in</strong>g the eighth year<br />

of his episcopate, two months and ten days : obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g from<br />

God the reward which he had diligently asked, that he should<br />

render his soul near the sacred body of Cuthbert. And he was<br />

buried <strong>in</strong> the chapter-house. His body lies between the body<br />

Paschal, servant of the servants of God, to his honourable brethren the<br />

suffragans throughout <strong>Scotland</strong> of the metropolis of York, greet<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

apostolic benediction.<br />

"May your affection know that we by the grace of omnipotent Gcd<br />

have promoted to the metropolis of York our venerable brother Gerard, formerly<br />

bishop of Hereford ; and have by liberality of the apostolic see granted<br />

to him the pallium and the privilege.<br />

And t<strong>here</strong>fore we <strong>in</strong>struct and com-<br />

mand that you show him henceforth due obedience, as to your archbishop."<br />
