Edgar was a man sweet and lovable, like <strong>in</strong> all th<strong>in</strong>gs to k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Edward [the Confessor], his relative, employ<strong>in</strong>g no tyranny,<br />

no harshness, no greed aga<strong>in</strong>st his people, but rul<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

subjects with the greatest charity and benevolence.<br />

When Edgar succumbed to his dest<strong>in</strong>ed fate, Henry allied<br />

to himself his successor, Alexander, giv<strong>in</strong>g him his illegitimate<br />

daughter <strong>in</strong> marriage.<br />

Through support of Norman barons David forced Alexander to admit<br />

his claim to southern <strong>Scotland</strong>. A. of R., De S., <strong>in</strong> Chr. of Ste., etc., iii,<br />
