K<strong>in</strong>g [Henry's] wife Matilda was descended from an ancient<br />

and illustrious l<strong>in</strong>e of k<strong>in</strong>gs, be<strong>in</strong>g the daughter of the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

From tender years she was brought up among nuns at<br />

Wilton and Romsey, 5 and also tra<strong>in</strong>ed her woman's bosom<br />

<strong>in</strong> letters. And hence to reject ignoble marriages more than<br />

once offered by her father she wore the veil, the mark of consecrated<br />

profession : for which reason, when the k<strong>in</strong>g wished<br />

to receive her as his wife, the matter came to be disputed,<br />

came to the Orkney Isles. He passed round <strong>Scotland</strong> on the west-northwest,<br />

and came past the other islands which perta<strong>in</strong> to his dom<strong>in</strong>ion, to<br />

Anglesey. He wished to enter Ireland ; but s<strong>in</strong>ce the Irish were prepared<br />

for war upon the sea-coasts, he turned aside. He dwelt <strong>in</strong> the isle of Man,<br />

which was deserted, and replenished it with <strong>in</strong>habitants, and fully supplied<br />

it with houses and other necessaries for human use. The other Cyclades<br />

also, placed <strong>in</strong> the great sea as if beyond the world, he visited, and by royal<br />
