for Matilda ; but she was div<strong>in</strong>ely reserved, and married to<br />

another with greater renown. For Henry wedded the virg<strong>in</strong><br />

and<br />

aforesaid, when he received the k<strong>in</strong>gdom of the English ;<br />

of her begot William Adel<strong>in</strong>us and Matilda the empress.<br />

And Eustace, count of Boulogne, received Mary as wife ;<br />

and she bore him an only daughter, whom Stephen, earl of<br />

Morta<strong>in</strong>, united to himself with her father's heritage. 1<br />

To queen Margaret were born six sons and two<br />

daughters ; 3<br />

and of these, three were k<strong>in</strong>gs, Edgar, Alexander<br />

and David. 4 Their sister Matilda wedded the most<br />

and of <strong>this</strong> most excellent and Christian<br />

glorious k<strong>in</strong>g Henry ;<br />

queen was born Matilda, who wedded first the Roman emperor,<br />

and then Geoffrey earl of Anjou. And of her were born k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Henry II, Geoffrey and William.<br />

And Mary, the daughter of queen Margaret, was given as<br />

wife to Eustace of Boulogne and of her ; was born Matilda,<br />

who wedded Stephen, the earl of Morta<strong>in</strong> and afterwards<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of the English. He had by <strong>this</strong> queen earl William of<br />

Warenne, and Eustace, count of Boulogne.<br />
