Malcolm, k<strong>in</strong>g of the Scots, met k<strong>in</strong>g William the younger<br />
<strong>in</strong> the city of Gloucester on the day of the festival of St. Bartholomew,<br />
2 as had been previously appo<strong>in</strong>ted by ambassadors<br />
between them : <strong>in</strong> order that, as certa<strong>in</strong> of the chief men of<br />
England wished, peace might be restored, and firm friendship<br />
might be established between them.<br />
But they departed mutually dissatisfied : for William disda<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
to see Malcolm or to confer with him, through too great<br />
pride and power. Moreover also he wished to constra<strong>in</strong> [Mal-<br />
colm] to do him justice 3 <strong>in</strong> his own court, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the judgment<br />
of his own barons only. But Malcolm would by no means<br />
do <strong>this</strong>, unless upon the borders of their realms, w<strong>here</strong> the k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
of the Scots were accustomed to do right by the k<strong>in</strong>gs of the<br />
English, and accord<strong>in</strong>g to the judgment of the chief men of both<br />
k<strong>in</strong>gdoms.<br />

But so soon as [Malcolm] came home, he gat<strong>here</strong>d his<br />
army and advanced <strong>in</strong>to England, harry<strong>in</strong>g with more<br />
wantonness than behoved him.<br />
