nearly all perished miserably before he could come to <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

a few days before St. Michael's mass. 1 And the k<strong>in</strong>g and his<br />

brother went with the land-army.<br />

But when k<strong>in</strong>g Malcolm heard that they would seek him<br />

with an army, he went with his army out of <strong>Scotland</strong> <strong>in</strong>to<br />

Lothian <strong>in</strong> England, and t<strong>here</strong> awaited.<br />

When k<strong>in</strong>g William with his army drew near, earl Robert<br />

and Edgar Ethel<strong>in</strong>g went between them, and made peace between<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>gs, so that k<strong>in</strong>g Malcolm came to our k<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

became his man for all such subjection as he had made before to<br />

his father. And that he confirmed with an oath.<br />

And k<strong>in</strong>g William promised him <strong>in</strong> land and <strong>in</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

all that he had had before under his father.<br />

In <strong>this</strong> peace Edgar Ethel<strong>in</strong>g was also reconciled with the<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g. And then the k<strong>in</strong>gs parted with great amity ; but that<br />

lasted only a little while. 2<br />

In <strong>this</strong> year k<strong>in</strong>g William with a great army went north to<br />

Carlisle, and restored the town and built the castle ;<br />

out Dolf<strong>in</strong>, 4 who ruled the land t<strong>here</strong> before. And he garrisoned<br />

the castle with his vassals and t<strong>here</strong>after came south<br />
