And on his return from [<strong>Scotland</strong>] William deprived Gospatric<br />

of the honour of the earldom, imput<strong>in</strong>g to him that by<br />

his counsel and aid he had been among those who had sla<strong>in</strong> the<br />

earl [Robert] de Comm<strong>in</strong>es with his followers <strong>in</strong> Durham, al-<br />

and that he<br />

though he had not <strong>in</strong> person been present t<strong>here</strong> ;<br />

had been on the side of the enemy when the Normans were<br />

sla<strong>in</strong> at York.<br />

When [Osulf ] was dead, Gospatric, son of Maldred, Cr<strong>in</strong>an's<br />

son, went to k<strong>in</strong>g William and obta<strong>in</strong>ed the earldom of Northumbria,<br />

bought for much money. 3<br />

For the honour of that earldom perta<strong>in</strong>ed to him by his<br />

mother's right. For his mother was Aldgitha, the daughter<br />

of earl Utred, who had her by Elfgiva, daughter of k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Ethelred.<br />

This Aldgitha her father gave <strong>in</strong> marriage to Maldred, son<br />

of Cr<strong>in</strong>an. 4<br />

And [Gospatric] held the earldom until, for the reasons<br />

aforesaid, the k<strong>in</strong>g took it from him. T<strong>here</strong>fore he fled to<br />

Malcolm, 5 and not long afterwards went by ship to Flanders. 6<br />

And when after some time he returned to <strong>Scotland</strong>, the aforesaid<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g [Malcolm] granted to him Dunbar, with the lands<br />

adjacent to it <strong>in</strong> Lothian, that by these he should provide for<br />

himself and his men until happier times returned.<br />

This Gospatric was the father of Dolf<strong>in</strong>, 7 Waldeve and<br />

Gospatric.<br />
