Gospatric appears to have been the cous<strong>in</strong> of Malcolm III ; cf . <strong>in</strong>fra,<br />

Ethelw<strong>in</strong> had offended the northern party by warn<strong>in</strong>g Robert of Cornm<strong>in</strong>es<br />

of his danger, and by enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g him at his house, which was burned<br />

down ; S. of D., H.R., ii, 187. He was nevertheless <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the loss of<br />

the northern cause ; cf. <strong>in</strong>fra, s.a. 1070.<br />

for he lay prostrate<br />

<strong>in</strong> the most noisome place, thrust through from side to side with a very<br />

sharp hay-scythe, and suffered <strong>in</strong>tolerable tortures. The wretch cried out,<br />

and lamentably without <strong>in</strong>termission emitted dismal howl<strong>in</strong>gs and weep<strong>in</strong>g<br />
