When earl Edw<strong>in</strong> [of Mercia] and earl Morcar [of Northum- "<br />

bria] learned <strong>this</strong>, they came thither and drove him from the<br />

land.<br />

And then he went to <strong>Scotland</strong> ;<br />

protected him, and aided him with provisions.<br />

After a victory over Edw<strong>in</strong> and Mortar on the 20th September, Harald<br />

Hardrada and Tosti were beaten and sla<strong>in</strong> by Harold at Stamford Bridge, on<br />

Among the survivors of Stamford Bridge was the earl of Orkney, (A.S.C.,<br />

MS. D,) Paul by name, who had been left with the party guard<strong>in</strong>g the ships ;<br />
