Aldhun, bishop of Durham, died.<br />

A great battle was fought at Carham between the Scots and<br />

the Angles, between Utred, Waldeve's son, the earl of North-<br />

umbria, 2 and Malcolm ; k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, the son of Kenneth. And<br />

with him <strong>in</strong> the battle was Owen the Bald, 3<br />

Strathclyde.<br />

In <strong>this</strong> year k<strong>in</strong>g Cnut went to Rome.<br />

And the same year 5 he went to <strong>Scotland</strong>, and the Scots'<br />

people," prayed to be released from life, and " after a few days, caught by<br />

disease, he died, after pass<strong>in</strong>g twenty-n<strong>in</strong>e years <strong>in</strong> the episcopate." He<br />

became bishop <strong>in</strong> 990, accord<strong>in</strong>g to Fl. of W., i, 149 ; so S. of D., H.R., ii,<br />

134. After his death the see was va<strong>can</strong>t for " nearly three years," S. of D.,<br />

H.D.E., i, 85 ; cf. Fl. of W., i, 183 : and his successor was appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1020 ;<br />

" A comet widely sp<strong>read</strong><strong>in</strong>g flames was seen throughout Northumbria<br />

for thirty nights.<br />

" When thirty days after <strong>this</strong> had passed, t<strong>here</strong> was fought at Carham<br />

that famous battle, between Northumbrians and Scots, <strong>in</strong> which nearly the<br />

whole people of St. Cuthbert perished ; and among them were also eighteen<br />

priests (sacerdotes) who had <strong>in</strong>advisedly mixed themselves up with the war.<br />

And hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong> the aforesaid bishop ended <strong>in</strong> death his grief and his life."<br />

Cnut's visit to Rome took place <strong>in</strong> 1027 (cf. Vita Chunradi Salici Imp.,<br />

<strong>in</strong> Bouquet, xi, 3.) But he did not return to England immediately ; see his<br />

letter to the English nation, <strong>in</strong> Fl. of W., i, 185-189 ; W. of M., G.R., i, 221-<br />

224. From 1028 to 1029 he was occupied <strong>in</strong> Norway, accord<strong>in</strong>g to A.S.C.,<br />

MSS. D, E, F. MS. C does not give the date of his return, and MS. A appears<br />

to place it <strong>in</strong> 1031.
