and systematic catalogue. Annals of the Transvaal Museum 38: 57–70.
An introduction to a vast descriptive and systematic project that will consider the large fauna of coraebine jewel
beetles from Madagascar and the Comoro Islands is presented. The described species are summarized in a
catalogue that contains 28 genera, one subgenus, 103 species and one subspecies. Coraebastus imperatrix
(Obenberger), from Madagascar, is resurrected from synonymy under C. quinquepustulatus Fairmaire, from the
Comoro Islands. Chloricala gratiosa Kerremans var. octosticta Obenberger and var. impunctata Théry and
Pseudagrilus scintillans var. madegassus Obenberger are synonymized under their nominate species.
INTRODUCTION
There are many accounts of a proliferation of
species in the literature. Perhaps these come more
frequently now with more attention being paid to
inventorying threatened habitats as world populations
rise and development invades once pristine
tracts of nature. In my experience, there is nothing
that compares to the vast and largely undescribed
jewel beetle subtribe Coraebina Bedel (1921)
(Coleoptera: Buprestidae: Agrilinae: Agrilini) from
Madagascar. This is the second contribution in a
series that is anticipated to take many years to
complete; the first was by Bellamy (1997).
During the latter half of the 20th century, French
and Malagasy entomologists discovered that
nest-provisioning wasps (Hymenoptera: Sphecoidea:
Philanthidae: Cerceris Latreille) were using
small jewel beetles as their primary prey. The two
principal collectors on the majority of specimen
data labels are P. Vadon and A. Peyrieras. The beetles
are paralyzed by the sting of female wasps and
then carried back to the nests, whereupon an egg is
laid and the emerging larva feeds on the beetle
before pupating inside the hollow body. By following
the wasps and learning to recognize their burrows
or nests, these entomologists were able to dig up
many comatose beetles, which lay in perfect or
near-perfect condition, and return them for preparation
and permanent museum storage.
The predator–prey relationship between certain
species of Cerceris and buprestids has been widely
reported for various parts of the world (e.g. in general:
Cartwright, 1931; Inglebert, 1993; Scullen and
Wold, 1969; Trinidad: Fisher, 1944; Callan, 1990;
North America: Grossbeck, 1912; Linsley and
MacSwain, 1956; Evans and Rubinik, 1978;
Kurczewski and Miller, 1984; Hook and Evans,
1991; Japan: Ohmomo and Usuba, 1997).
Several colleagues (W. F. Barr, H. A. Hespenheide,
S. G. Wellso, pers. comm.) had told me about the
collection of Madagascan buprestids seen in the
Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, during
their respective research visits in the 1970s and
1980s, but until I experienced this firsthand during
my initial visit to the museum in late 1995, I really
could not understand the breadth of this collection.
There are thousands of specimens, prepared and
labelled, representing a large number of mostly
undescribed species. From an initial attempt to
sort and arrange these specimens by the former
head of the Coleoptera Department, the late
A. Descarpentries, an estimate of the size of this
fauna is between 500–600 undescribed species,
which may require 20–30 new genera to contain

58 ANNALS OF THE TRANSVAAL MUSEUM, VOLUME 38, 2001
them. It seems clear from the literature, as well as
from the examples of other buprestid prey in this
material, that the Cerceris predators are not
particular to coraebine buprestids, nor possibly
even just buprestids. There are large series of other
buprestid species (e.g., Sponsor Gory and Laporte,
see Descarpentries, 1965; Anthaxia Eschscholtz,
see Descarpentries, 1967) that are each of about
the same general size and shape as the many
coraebine species and this suggests that the
predators are perhaps more selective about the
physical characteristics of the prey, perhaps to be
able to contain them within specific morphological
adaptations to maintain a hold. Krombein (1981: 8)
correlated structure and function when he described
and figured the ‘buprestid clamp’ found in
members of the ‘bupresticida group’ of Cerceris,
including species from Sri Lanka, Europe and North
America.
The present paper is intended as an introduction
to the many nomenclatural acts and descriptive
papers that must follow. By introducing the subject
and providing an accounting of the current systematics
of the known Madagascan coraebine fauna, all
subsequent efforts can focus on the description of
new taxa and several of the large genera which have
never been revised, e.g. Entomogaster Saunders.
The catalogue included herein is presented in full,
indicating all taxa and the nomenclatural history for
each species. This effort to present a full catalogue
of the previously described taxa of this subtribe is
undertaken now to bring together all of the available
information on a large group of species that have
mostly appeared in random and disparate descriptive
publications and earlier more general catalogues.
The chronology of catalogues that have
treated these taxa, in part, are: Gemminger and Harold,
1869; Saunders, 1871; Kerremans, 1885, 1892;
Alluaud, 1900; Kerremans, 1903; Théry, 1905; Marie
and Lesne, 1917; Obenberger, 1934; and Bellamy,
1985. The work of Obenberger (1934) was the fourth
of six fascicles of the two volumes on Buprestidae in
the Coleopterorum Catalogue, the last effort to catalogue
the world’s beetle fauna. Many of the taxa of
Madagascan Coraebina were described subsequent
to that catalogue and have not been found in
the literature after their respective original descriptions.
For future geographical notes, distributional
accounts and attempts to summarize the range of
particular taxa within the Madagascan habitats, I
note here that a great many of the older taxa of this
group were described from a type locality no more
precise than ‘Madagascar’. However, considering
the wealth of specimens of many of these taxa that
were harvested, some detail will be filled in as
species are described and genera are revised. As a
reference for Madagascan place names, the work
of Viette (1991) will be the standard.
The described complement of these beetles is 28
genera, one subgenus, 103 species and one subspecies.
The single related taxon, Coraebastus
quinquepustulatus Fairmaire, from the Comoro
Islands is included with the reinstatement from
synonymy of Coraebastus imperatrix (Obenberger)
from Madagascar. In the catalogue, the genera and
species are listed alphabetically. With so much
descriptive work to be done, phylogenetic predictions
are premature, since each subsequent
descriptive paper will alter the conclusions about
transformation character state series and
synapomorphies. At the end of the catalogue are
listed 11 species names that were originally
described in one of two older coraebine genera.
These are listed as ‘undefined placement’ pending
better understanding of relationships with the many
new species amongst which some of these will
undoubtedly fit. Following current trends in dealing
with infrasubspecific names, I will propose all
varietal names listed below as new synonyms (see
Bellamy & Peterson, 2000).
Abbreviations used herein are: nom. nov. =
nomen novum; nom. nud. = nomen nudum; nom.
superfl. = superfluous name, i.e. a replacement
name that was unnecessary; orig. desc. = original
description; rev. = revision; spp. key = species key;
syn. = synonym; syn. nov. = new synonym;
unvn. = unavailable name, i.e. infrasubspecific
names, nomina nuda; var. = variety, variation.
Chloricalla (lapsus calami): Kerremans, 1900:
319; 1903: 231.
REMARKS. This genus is endemic to Madagascar
and shows no close similarities to the Afrotropical
fauna. The two varietal names deserve no recognition
and are technically invalid (ICZN 1999, Article
REMARKS. This genus is endemic to Madagascar
and its placement in Psilopterina or Coraebina has
been somewhat confused as indicated by the
synonymy above. I have examined the types of the
Fairmaire taxon and am confident that this is a
Coraebastus); Bellamy, 1985: 424.
Type species: Annietta imperatrix Obenberger
(original designation).
REMARKS. This genus is endemic to Madagascar
and the Comoro Islands. While I am in agreement
with Descarpentries (1978) about the generic
synonymy, I do not agree with the species synonymy.
I have examined at least one specimen of each
species from Madagascar and the Comores and
find species level distinctions that validate both
taxa. This is not surprising given the different
species in other buprestid genera found in
these two places (e.g. Polybothris Spinola, Chalcophoropsis
monochroma from the Comores
(Gianasso 1999)).
12. imperatrix (Obenberger), name reinstated
Annietta imperatrix Obenberger, 1931: 184–185
(orig. desc.); 1934: 809.
1934: 817; Bellamy, 1985: 425; Holynski,
1993: 15.
Type species: Buprestis undatus Fabricius (subsequent
designation: Descarpentries and
Villiers, 1967: 471).
REMARKS. This genus is widespread in the
Palaearctic and Oriental Regions. Representation in
the Afrotropical fauna was eliminated by the generic
transfers of Bellamy (1988) and the placement of
C. insignis in Coraebus is suspect.
14. insignis Kerremans
Coraebus insignis Kerremans, 1898: 83 (orig.
Type species: Discoderopsis incurvata Théry
(original monotypy).
REMARKS. This genus is endemic to Madagascar
and is putatively close to the Afrotropical lineage
which contains Pseudokerremansia and Cupriscobina,
both Bellamy and Holm (1985).
15. nigrovirens (Fairmaire)
Undefined placement
The following 11 species were originally
described in one of two coraebine genera:
Discoderes Chevrolat or Phlocteis Kerremans.
Discoderes was last discussed by Bellamy (1986)
and is restricted to sub-Saharan Africa, with two
species distributed in habitats directly below the
Sahara. Phlocteis is a small genus with three
sub-Saharan African species also last discussed by
Bellamy (1986). As noted above, two Madagascan
species, P. hova Théry and P. humeralis (Waterhouse),
are placed therein. The types of each of
these species require study and comparison to the
currently more restricted definition of these two
genera and the other Madagascan coraebines
before transfers to other genera will be possible.
93. ambanjana (Obenberger)
Doubtful taxa
Anadora hova Kerremans, 1899: 277 (orig.
desc.); Alluaud, 1900: 197; Kerremans, 1903:
258; Théry, 1905: 125; 1927: 260;
Obenberger, 1934: 794 (howa, lapsus
calami).
REMARKS. Anadora Kerremans is another endemic
Subsaharan African genus last revised by Bellamy
(1986). Théry (1905) listed this taxon as a member
of the Madagascan fauna and later (Théry 1927)
synonymized it with A. mechowi Quedenfeldt.
Obenberger (1934), however, listed it as a valid
species in his catalogue. Since there are no other
specimens of Anadora in the vast Madagascan
coraebine collection in the Paris museum, I support
the synonymy and do not consider either the genus
or species as valid members of the Madagascan
fauna.
In the Paris museum general collection and in the
Obenberger collection in Prague, there are a number
of Madagascan coraebines labelled as ‘types’
of various genera and species. These are taxa
apparently intended for description by
Descarpentries, Théry (both Paris collection), or
Obenberger, and thus are simply manuscript or ‘in
collection’ names. None of these names appear to
be valid as I cannot find descriptions or any mention
in the literature or the Zoological Record. I will not list
any of these names here as that would add confusion
to the discussion and nomina nuda to the literature.
Should any of these names be found in the
literature, they will be discussed in a forthcoming
contribution to this series.
