Derivation and Meaning.
composition of Iceland
place-names.
Kattu-gil = the wild
cats' gully {Kiittr, a cat,
gen. Kuttar, gen. pi.
Kutta). Cp. Kattardalr,
Kattamef, Kattarhi'ifUi
a ravine, and git, a ravine,
i.e. two words of practically
identical meaning.
As we have seen,
such redundancy is common
enough where the
Norse meaning has been
lost, e.g. Glen Scorrodale,
Ben Roinebhal,
etc., etc. But this
almost always occurs in
compound woi-ds. Absolute
duplications like
Craignish ( = creag nes)
are extremely rare. I
venture to suggest, however,
as a possible
