<strong>Contraception</strong> has a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g history <strong>in</strong> Jewish law and practice. It<br />
began <strong>in</strong> Biblical times, was first explored <strong>in</strong> the period of the<br />
Mishna, then was <strong>in</strong>terpreted <strong>in</strong> various ways by the Rishonim, and<br />
f<strong>in</strong>alized <strong>in</strong> radically different ways by the Acharonim and<br />
contemporary rabb<strong>in</strong>ic authorities. In many circles, it is generally held<br />
to be forbidden except under press<strong>in</strong>g circumstances. Yet, it is so<br />
rarely discussed <strong>in</strong> the open that only a t<strong>in</strong>y percentage of orthodox<br />
Jews are familiar with the background and the primary op<strong>in</strong>ions of<br />
this important issue.<br />
There is no explicit Biblical prohibition of contraception. Some<br />
associated the practice with the evils of society <strong>in</strong> the days of Noah<br />
before the Flood. More explicitly, the Talmud (Yavamos 34b)<br />
described it as the s<strong>in</strong> of Onan, the second son of Yehuda. His brief<br />
story is found <strong>in</strong> Bereshis 38:4-10. Asked by his father to marry the<br />
wife of his dead brother Er <strong>in</strong> order to carry on Er’s name by<br />
father<strong>in</strong>g his wife’s children, Onan understood that the children<br />
would not really be considered his own. He then ‘ru<strong>in</strong>ed (his seed) on<br />
the ground’ so as not father children on behalf of his brother. The<br />
Talmud understood this as an oblique reference to a crude form of<br />
contraception commonly known as coitus <strong>in</strong>teruptus – withdrawal of<br />
the penis prior to ejaculation dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tercourse, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
waste of semen. The rabb<strong>in</strong>ic description for this practice is ‘to<br />
thresh with<strong>in</strong> and w<strong>in</strong>now outside’, and the s<strong>in</strong> is that of ‘spill<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
seed for no purpose’. <strong>Contraception</strong>, at least as practiced by Onan,<br />
resulted <strong>in</strong> the s<strong>in</strong> of wasted seed, a s<strong>in</strong> unwritten anywhere <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Bible but traditionally known as one of the most severe<br />
transgressions a Jewish man can commit.<br />
This was the classic and perhaps only form of contraception known<br />
<strong>in</strong> Biblical times, and rabb<strong>in</strong>ic authorities judged all other forms of<br />
contraception by compar<strong>in</strong>g them to it. By the time of the Mishna,<br />
however, at least one other method of contraception was <strong>in</strong> practice
