Unoccupied buildings
Buildings in a desperate state of repair, particularly those that are important to the character or appearance of a
conservation area, may become cause for concern, either because their condition places them at risk, or they become
a danger to public safety.
In such cases, the Local Authority and members of the public may approach the Secretary of State for Culture, Media
and Sport. If it appears to the Secretary of State that the preservation of an unoccupied building in a Conservation
Area is important for maintaining the character or appearance of that Area, and if its condition is a cause of concern,
powers may be exercised under Section 76 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
