TEMPORARY DIVERSION DIKE<br />

Practice Description<br />

A temporary ridge <strong>of</strong> compacted soil constructed at the top <strong>of</strong> a sloping disturbed area, to divert storm<br />

run<strong>of</strong>f from upslope drainage areas away from unprotected disturbed areas <strong>and</strong> slopes to a stabilized outlet<br />

<strong>and</strong> to divert sediment-laden run<strong>of</strong>f from a disturbed area to sediment-trapping facility such as a sediment<br />

trap or sediment basin.<br />

Conditions Where Practice Applies<br />

Whenever stormwater run<strong>of</strong>f must be temporarily diverted to protect disturbed areas <strong>and</strong> slopes or retain<br />

sediment on site during construction. These structures generally have a life expectancy <strong>of</strong> 18 months or<br />

less, which can be prolonged with proper maintenance.<br />
