7. Sericea Lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata)<br />

Uses: Hay, pasture, erosion control, cover crop, wildlife food.<br />

Description: Warm season perennial legume with upright woody stems 12 to 18 inches tall. Roots widely<br />

branched penetrating soil 3 feet or more.<br />

Adaptation: Well adapted to all parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. Best on well-drained, deep soils <strong>of</strong> medium<br />

texture. Will also grow on s<strong>and</strong>y, rather acidic, infertile soils. Most <strong>of</strong>ten the legume <strong>of</strong> choice<br />

for eastern <strong>Virginia</strong>. Optimum pH range is 6.0 to 6.5, but will tolerate a range <strong>of</strong> 5.0 to 7.0. It<br />

is drought-tolerant. Common varieties in <strong>Virginia</strong> are Serala <strong>and</strong> Interstate.<br />

Establishment: Seed from April to June. Requires a firm seedbed. Use only inoculated seed.<br />

Rates vary from 20 to 30 lbs. <strong>of</strong> unhulled seed per acre. Requires phosphate <strong>and</strong> potash. Will<br />

not persist under frequent mowing (once a year recommended).<br />
