In the study, the pre-test and the post-test were adapted from the tests in Truong (2009) because
they were suitable to the researcher’s aim <strong>of</strong> measuring the students’ vocabulary knowledge
before and after the experiment. <strong>The</strong> pre-test and the post-test were designed to be similar to
each other in terms <strong>of</strong> content, task types, allotted time and numbers <strong>of</strong> the tasks. In other words,
the post-test was the pre-test with the items rearranged. In order for the post-test’s validity and
reliability to be ensured, students were not given the answer keys <strong>of</strong> the pre-test. Besides, they
were not notified in advance that they would be given another test.
It should be noticed that each <strong>of</strong> the tests included two parts with the range <strong>of</strong> scores displayed
from 0 to 40 for each part. In the first part with forty items, there were 30 target words and the
other 10 additional distracters (items 19, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 in the pre-test and
items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 26, 29 in the post-test). <strong>The</strong> distracters were used to verify the
students’ familiarity with the target words. With the aim <strong>of</strong> testing the students’ productive
ability, this part required the students to write the English words for the given Vietnamese
equivalents in twenty minutes. Before giving the second part <strong>of</strong> the tests, the teacher researcher
collected the answer sheets <strong>of</strong> the first part. Some examples from the first part <strong>of</strong> the tests are
shown in Table 2 below.
