Benny Bailey, Clark Terry, Curtis Fuller, Phil Woods, Sahib Shihab and Tito Puente, among many others. As
a bonus, included is the complete album ‘I Dig Dancers’. The LP features the same band and immediately
precedes ‘Around the World’ in Jones’ discography. Also, added are four extra tracks from the same sessions
Pizzarelli, John Cocuzzi, Nicki Parrott, Eddie Metz Jr) [2011] The Three Amigos is not a table-hopping
Mariachi band, but an ever-cruising all-star jazz combo, so dubbed during a gig in Mexican waters when they first played together. Don’t let the
Alaskan wolf jackets throw you off, they are mementos from another cruise destination, the 49th state. If
luxurious cruise ships come to mind, you’ve got the picture. This particular journey took the Amigos to a
Florida studio where the eight world-class Amigos led by Bob Wilber strut their stuff, whether as soloists or
tight ensemble players, backed by a swinging rhythm section, fresh from the Third Arbors Invitational Jazz
Party. [Item Code: 73419 CD: $17.00]
19437 ROSSANO SPORTIELLO NICKI PARROTT LIVE AT THE JAZZ CORNER Beats Up • Gal In Calico
Eddie Metz) [2011] Recorded live at the legendary Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, SC, Rossano Sportiello,
Nicki Parrott, and Eddie Metz perform an hour’s worth of unpretentious, mainstream jazz musical gems.
Top-flight drummer Metz appears regularly at Disney World and has performed with Count Basie, Woody
Herman, and Clark Terry. Bassist Parrott performs vocals on two selections, displaying her lovely, plaintive
singing voice beautifully. Sportiello’s jazz piano stylings wow the audience as he performs perfect stride and
mainstream jazz piano in his original, charming manner. [Item Code: 73283 CD: $17.00]
Ruby Braff on trumpet accompanied by Red Richards-piano, John Field-bass, Ephy Resnick-trombone
and Kenny John on drums. “Portrait of PeeWee” Joined again by old pals Ruby Braff, Bud Freeman, Vic
Russell Plays”.Pee Wee is joined by Bud Freeman, George Wettling, Eddie Condon, Dick Carey, Vic Dickenson,
moving away from playing the well worn Dixieland standards and playing a dozen brand new selections all
composed by the great man himself! There is some first rate solo work here, Braff shines on trumpet while
Dickenson is always exciting and daring! [Item Code: 73473 2-CD: $24.00]
set. Two hard to find on CD albums help to make up our second outing for the remarkable Stan Getz “The
Soft Swing” and “Cool Velvet”! “Focus” Recorded in 1961, “Focus” was commissioned by Stan Getz and
composed and arranged by Eddie Sauter, Getz having admired Sauters work since he had played it with
Benny Goodman at the age of 18! “Focus”.” is very rare it is not jazz in the forms we have come to accept it
is music of a very high calibre both written and improvised”. “The Soft Swing” the first of our hard to find on
CD selections, has an interesting line up for Stan in 1957 with Mose Allison, no less ,on piano, Jerry Segal
on drums and Addison Farmer on bass. Here we find Stan opening up both emotionally and rhythmically
albeit still retaining his ability and desire to play beautiful ballads alongside band lifting stompers! “West
Coast Jazz”.The result of a live set at Zardies in Hollywood one hot sticky night in 1955 where Stan had put together a pick up band comprising
West Coast musicians Conte Candoli, Lou Levy, Leroy Vinnegar and Shelly Manne. Getz thought the band was so hot he decided to get the sound
down on record and “ West Coast Jazz” is the result cool!! “Cool Velvet” the second of our hard to find on CD selections this album finds Stan
with strings! As the original liner notes attest “it is doubtful whether there is anyone whose style is better
suited to the muted emotions of a string background than Stan Getz”. Recorded in Stuttgart, Germany in
1960 with European musicians Getz manages to craft together a work of sensibility and melodic wit selecting
tracks like “Round Midnight” and “Whisper Not” and bringing to them his own inimitable style. [Item
novelty jazz six-man Quintette in the late 1930s; others date from the 1940s and ‘50s. All get a spectacular
The songs on this CD emotionally range from joy to despair, from innocence to cynicism, from almost rowdy
to gentle and there’s more then a touch of the sexually alluring thrown in. To Them all Barbara brings her
supreme musicality and totally secure intonation, perfect diction and that almost unbelievable control of
tone and timbre which extracts the very essence of each piece plus a subtle swing, which informs everything
she sings and all this without sounding anything but totally spontaneous. A perfect example of the art that
conceals art. [Item Code: 73310 CD: $16.00]
Press Club into an impromptu performance that was one of his last concerts before passing away 5 months
later. Joined by longtime band-mates Tyree Glenn and Tommy Gwaltney, Armstrong shows no signs of
frailty on classics including ‘Mack the Knife.’ Armstrong often signed letters ‘Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours,’
which makes for an apt title since his favorite recipes are included in the liner notes. [Item Code: 73471
• Headin’ West (Water Jug) • Autumn Leaves • Time On My Hands (Personnel: John Houston, Charles
Williams, Sonny Stitt) [1961] The first five tracks are from the LP ‘Boss Tenors’. The rest of the tracks are
from the LP ‘Dig Him’. Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt were co-leaders of their own group in the early ‘50s,
but though it took them almost ten years to get back together again, they were as incendiary a pair as ever.
Stit’s legendary quickness of thought and execution were, as always, outstanding, but Ammons’ passion and
adroit, canny way of developing his solos made him an ideal partner for these two tenor jousts - Stitt, by
the way, also picks up his alto for a lyrical ‘There’s No Greater Love.’ John Houston, who had played with
Ammons and Stitt in the early ‘50s, is the only familiar name in a solid rhythm section. The timeless groove
delivered by this superior combination puts the music beyond analysis. Just enjoy two great pros and their
swinging message. [Item Code: 73427 CD: $18.00]
Milt Jackson, Cal Tjader and Lionel Hampton, who hailed him as ‘one of the greatest vibes players on the
scene today’, Johnny Lyttle was noted for his brilliant technique and a personal sound ideal for the kind of
grooving organ combo he led on ‘Blue Vibes’ and ‘Happy Ground’, his debut albums from the ‘60s included
here. Whether swinging at uptempo or delivering a soulful ballad, all his work has the irresistible, soul-stirring
warmth of a player admiringly nicknamed ‘Fast Hands’ by his peers. [Item Code: 73428 CD: $18.00]
with his three hit compositions: ‘Moanin’, ‘This Here’, and ‘Dat Dere’, all part of his first album, ‘This Here
for the music. [Item Code: 73431 CD: $18.00]
Duke Ellington, Tadd Dameron and Count Basie, and when he came to make his debut as sole leader in
1960 with ‘Takin’ Care of Business,’ it was clear why. Regardless of tempo, he was always a rhythmically
acute, swinging and thoughtful storyteller. [Item Code: 73432 2-CD: $27.00]
1654 TED McNABB AND CO. ARRANGEMENTS BY MARION EVANS - BIG BAND SWING Mountain
Meet Miss Jones • Lover • You’re My Thrill • It Had To Be You • Three Little Words • Spring Is Here • Close
As Pages In A Book (Collective Personnel: Bernie Glow, Burt Collins, Doc Severinsen, John Bello, Urbie
Green, Frank Rehak, Dick Meldonian, Gene Quill, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Nat Pierce, Bary Galbraith, Milt
Hinton, Osie Johnson, Herb Geller, More) [1959] Despite having an A-list personnel of people like Zoot
Sims, Al Cohn, Frank Rehak, Urbie Green, Gene Quill, Bernie Glow and a Nat Pierce-Milt Hinton-Osie
Johnson rhythm section with Barry Galbraith on guitar, this is probably the rarest of all big band albums from
the 1950s. Moreover, Ted McNabb, whose name it bears, isn’t even on it. He was just the guy who put up
the money. He paid for the charts by arranger Marion Evans, the musicians and the studio time. For him it
was a dream realized; a big band in the Swing Era style, clean, precise and stomping, like the old Basie and
Goodman bands. The arrangements are well-crafted, not uncomplicated, but not overly complex either and,
in the hands of this band, they swing mightily in the call-and-response manner of the Swing Era. . [Item
1657 JOE ALEXANDER QUINTET BLUE JUBILEE Blues Jubilee • Brown’s Town • I’ll Close My Eyes • Terri’s Blues • Weird Beard (Personnel:
John Hunt, Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, Albert Tootie Heath) [1960] Being virtually unknown is no reliable indication of a jazz musician’s
quality; the music has more than its share of highly competent musicians whose careers were passed in almost total obscurity. A case in point is
Joe Alexander, a hard-driving young tenor from Birmingham, Alabama, who made his leader debut on this,
his only album. Sharing the front line with him was the almost equally unsung Joe Hunt, the trumpet and
flugelhorn player of the accomplished Ray Charles band. [Item Code: 73434 CD: $18.00]
• Night Movement • A Blues Mood • Azil • Lover Man (Personnel: Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Kelly, Paul
Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, Albert Tootie Heath) [1960] Walter Benton was a Los Angeles tenor saxophonist
who came to prominence in 1954 when he recorded with the Clifford Brown All Stars. A successful, unaffected
blowing session, it demonstrated that he had reached full maturity as a player, with a style influenced
by Charlie Parker, but owing a debt to an earlier lineage from Coleman Hawkins, a trait especially evident
in his sound. [Item Code: 73435 CD: $18.00]
Stallings’ 2012 HighNote title places her firmly in the pantheon of great female jazz singers of this, or any
other time. Since her first release in 2010, Mary was the honoree at the 2011 SF Jazz Gala, the Tanglewood
Jazz Festival in Lenox, MA as well as countless jazz clubs and rooms on both coasts. Here, together with
music director and pianist Eric Reed, Mary lends her sultry and swinging voice to a dozen selections and
shows why she is no longer jazz’s best-kept secret. [Item Code: 73349 CD: $17.00]
The tag New Yorkers was widely used among jazz bands and dance orchestras regardless of he actual
background of the musicians. ‘New York’ stood for cosmopolitan musicians. Several groups visiting Europe
travelled under this name, including Alex Hyde, Frank Guarente and George Carhart. The tunes on this CD
come from several recording sessions and include a here-to-fore unknown vocalist, Al Bowlly, made for
the Homocord company. Other tunes originate at the Tri-Ergon movie company where fourteen titles were
recorded. Also included are eight Frank Guarente Kalophon discs re-issued in their entirety here. [Item Code: 73309 CD: $15.00]
talk of the music world and the rage of college campuses - albeit for a very short time. Their 1924 recordings
featuring cornetist Bix Beiderbecke are essential jazz classics, and the rarely reissued sides with Jimmy
McPartland are rare delights. However, past reissues of the band have two recurring problems: Sound quality
that suffers from over filtering and too much ‘restoration’ and incorrect pitch and ignoring the complete
output of the band. This new release fixes these problems. [Item Code: 73323 CD: $18.00]
1937] Music of Vallee during his first decade as a superstar. Rudy Vallee formed The Connecticut Yankees,
a popular dance band, in the late 1920’s. This band was among the early groups to air nightly on radio hile
performing live at the Heigh-Ho Club with Vallee doing the vocals. His crooning style caught the fancy of
the ladies and made him an overnight sensation and also the very first crooner over whom the women would
‘swoon’. Soon other romantic singing idols would followed in his footsteps including Bing Crosby, Russ
Columbo and eventually Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and numerous others. But it all started with Rudy Vallee. He can take credit for discovering
numerous hit songs including the ever-popular ‘As Time Goes By’. Vallee’s other accomplishments include
hosting the first variety show on radio the called The Fleischman Hour Which was one of the top programs
for many years and one responsible for the discovery a host of new stars. [Item Code: 2192 CD: $16.00]
[1927-1931] As singer, Marvin was along the lines of Cliff Edwards and Gene Austin and while he did
ballads like Edwards and Austin, most of Marvin’s recordings are bright, upbeat tunes that are quintessential
1920’s. He played several string instruments and was a ukulele virtuoso and many uke fans are attracted to
his recordings for that reason. From about 1926 thru the early thirties Marvin became a very popular and
highly prolific recording personality both as a solo artist and as a vocalist for orchestral recordings. Marvin
was also in vaudeville and something of a radio pioneer having two shows in the early 1930’s ‘Dr. Cheer’
and the ‘Lonesome Singer of the Air’ and was also featured in some short subject films. In the mid 1930’s he joined his friend Gene Autry’s organization
and wrote songs for Autry films and popular Radio show. [Item Code: 73294 CD: $16.00]
That’s Her Now • Outside [1925-1929] Banjo virtuoso, Harry Reser, along with his entertaining novelty
bands, captured the very essence of the music from the Roaring Twenties. His bright, amusing, toe-tapping
arrangements were a joy to hear that always left his listeners with a smile. This CD provides digitally restored
and wonderfully mastered recording of Reser’s original 1920s recordings by such groups as The Clicquot
Club Eskimos, Seven Wild Men, Jazz Pilots, Six Jumping Jacks and others. Selections include several 20’s
favorites including “At Sundown,” “My One and Only” and “Crazy Rhythm” plus some nonsense songs like
“If My Baby Cooks As Good As She Looks.” Each selection in this CD sparkles with the amazing banjo segments
by Reser. [Item Code: 73499 CD: $16.00]
The Andrews Sisters during the peak of their popularity in the 1940s all taken from radio performances from
that period. Most selections were either contemporary hits from that time such as “On The Atcheson, Topeka
and the Santa Fe,” “Buttons and Bows,”and “Ghost Riders in the Sky” or traditional standards like “I Don’t
Know Why,” “Blue Skies” and “Ain’t We Got Fun.” A few of these numbers include duets with crooners Bob
Crosby or Curt Massey. These musical arrangements from radio are often much more interesting than those
from their commercial recordings. Perhaps the highlight of this collection is a moving production version of
their great hit “(I’ll Be With You) In Apple Blossom Time” accompanied by Curt Massey and vocal chorus.
Goldings, Aaron Weinsein, Tony Kadleck, John Mosca, Kenny Berger, Andy Fusco) [2011] On this album,
jazz guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli pays simultaneous tribute to the pop music of his adolescence (Steely
Dan, Billy Joel, the Allman Brothers, Elvis Costello) and the jazz tradition in which he, as a member of the
celebrated Pizzarelli dynasty, was steeped from his earliest years. The album title refers to the fact that the
program takes classic pop songs and puts them in jazz settings: thus heard on this CD is a cool bossa nova
arrangement of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Free Man in Paris,’ a completely natural lounge-lizard setting of Tom Waits’
‘Drunk on the Moon,’ and a hard-swinging, boppish version of James Taylor’s ‘Traffic Jam’ that incorporates
the Joe Henderson composition ‘The Kicker.’ [Item Code: 73456 CD: $19.00]
Mobley was considered a guru with a singular focus on music. This live recording, made at the popular
Newark, NJ club, The Picadilly, precedes the 25 albums he recorded for Blue Note Records. The club had a
have genuinely mastered the subtle art of bringing jazz to the rich, orchestral form, often called ‘listening’
music. Ordinarily, the two kinds of music just don’t mix well, but then there’s nothing ordinary about Frank
Cordell - or his arranging, composing and conducting. [Item Code: 73411 CD: $20.00]
