selections with Buddy, Harry Edison finally gets his name in lights for ‘Harry & Sweets’. The final selection finds Buddy paying tribute to one of

wandered into the studio during recording and he and The Kid had decided to lay some solid music down 

on tape. A fine line up greets the second selection ‘The Swing’s The Thing’ from 1957. The big band experience 

is the next selection from 1959, ‘Illinois Jacquet Flies Again’. 1951’s ‘Illinois Jacquet Collates’ finds 

The Kid joined by Carl Perkins on piano, Oscar Moore on guitar, Red Callender on bass and J.C. Heard on

distinct sections. First a big band, second a medium size jazz group and the third features an eight man line 

up. ‘Tonite’s Music Today’ teams Bob up with Zoot Sims. Finally ‘The Blues Hot & Cold’ features the Bob

is joined by Phil Woods on alto sax. “Mann in the Morning” finds Herbie this time in Sweden where he restricts 

himself to just the flute and tenor sax duties playing alongside three basic groups of musicians. [Item

set. Two hard to find on CD albums help to make up our second outing for the remarkable Stan Getz “The 

Soft Swing” and “Cool Velvet”! “Focus” Recorded in 1961, “Focus” was commissioned by Stan Getz and 

composed and arranged by Eddie Sauter, Getz having admired Sauters work since he had played it with 

Benny Goodman at the age of 18! “Focus”.” is very rare it is not jazz in the forms we have come to accept it 

is music of a very high calibre both written and improvised”. “The Soft Swing” the first of our hard to find on 

CD selections, has an interesting line up for Stan in 1957 with Mose Allison, no less ,on piano, Jerry Segal 

on drums and Addison Farmer on bass. Here we find Stan opening up both emotionally and rhythmically 

albeit still retaining his ability and desire to play beautiful ballads alongside band lifting stompers! “West 

Coast Jazz”.The result of a live set at Zardies in Hollywood one hot sticky night in 1955 where Stan had put together a pick up band comprising 

West Coast musicians Conte Candoli, Lou Levy, Leroy Vinnegar and Shelly Manne. Getz thought the band was so hot he decided to get the sound 

down on record and “ West Coast Jazz” is the result cool!! “Cool Velvet” the second of our hard to find on CD selections this album finds Stan 

with strings! As the original liner notes attest “it is doubtful whether there is anyone whose style is better 

suited to the muted emotions of a string background than Stan Getz”. Recorded in Stuttgart, Germany in 

1960 with European musicians Getz manages to craft together a work of sensibility and melodic wit selecting 

tracks like “Round Midnight” and “Whisper Not” and bringing to them his own inimitable style. [Item

adroit, canny way of developing his solos made him an ideal partner for these two tenor jousts - Stitt, by 

the way, also picks up his alto for a lyrical ‘There’s No Greater Love.’ John Houston, who had played with 

Ammons and Stitt in the early ‘50s, is the only familiar name in a solid rhythm section. The timeless groove

Johnson rhythm section with Barry Galbraith on guitar, this is probably the rarest of all big band albums from 

the 1950s. Moreover, Ted McNabb, whose name it bears, isn’t even on it. He was just the guy who put up 

the money. He paid for the charts by arranger Marion Evans, the musicians and the studio time. For him it 

was a dream realized; a big band in the Swing Era style, clean, precise and stomping, like the old Basie and 

Goodman bands. The arrangements are well-crafted, not uncomplicated, but not overly complex either and, 

in the hands of this band, they swing mightily in the call-and-response manner of the Swing Era. . [Item

1937] Music of Vallee during his first decade as a superstar. Rudy Vallee formed The Connecticut Yankees, 

a popular dance band, in the late 1920’s. This band was among the early groups to air nightly on radio hile 

performing live at the Heigh-Ho Club with Vallee doing the vocals. His crooning style caught the fancy of 

the ladies and made him an overnight sensation and also the very first crooner over whom the women would 

‘swoon’. Soon other romantic singing idols would followed in his footsteps including Bing Crosby, Russ 

Columbo and eventually Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and numerous others. But it all started with Rudy Vallee. He can take credit for discovering 

numerous hit songs including the ever-popular ‘As Time Goes By’. Vallee’s other accomplishments include 

hosting the first variety show on radio the called The Fleischman Hour Which was one of the top programs

[1927-1931] As singer, Marvin was along the lines of Cliff Edwards and Gene Austin and while he did 

ballads like Edwards and Austin, most of Marvin’s recordings are bright, upbeat tunes that are quintessential 

1920’s. He played several string instruments and was a ukulele virtuoso and many uke fans are attracted to 

his recordings for that reason. From about 1926 thru the early thirties Marvin became a very popular and 

highly prolific recording personality both as a solo artist and as a vocalist for orchestral recordings. Marvin 

was also in vaudeville and something of a radio pioneer having two shows in the early 1930’s ‘Dr. Cheer’ 

and the ‘Lonesome Singer of the Air’ and was also featured in some short subject films. In the mid 1930’s he joined his friend Gene Autry’s organization

Know Why,” “Blue Skies” and “Ain’t We Got Fun.” A few of these numbers include duets with crooners Bob 

Crosby or Curt Massey. These musical arrangements from radio are often much more interesting than those 

from their commercial recordings. Perhaps the highlight of this collection is a moving production version of 

their great hit “(I’ll Be With You) In Apple Blossom Time” accompanied by Curt Massey and vocal chorus.
