Haiku
April in the country
mud time; frogs peeping
Bright blue skies, brief
showers come.
Pink arbutus blooms.
Midsummer
mown hay scents the air
shrill-toned locust's voice
is heard
heat-waves rise at noon.
Tornado
clouds piled up a loft
nature's vacuum swept by
death strolled down
the street.
Summer night
whip-poor-wills call
babies cuddle down to sleep
mothers heave a sigh.
Requiem
The days when eyes were bright and hopes soared high
Are scuttled in a slough of broken dreams
Where fifty-thousand hearts were all pumped dry
In payment for an unsuccessful scheme.
With honor, pea\?e is what we sought in vain.
Through bluff we tried to stem a rising tide,
But armies that we sweated blood to train
Proved well equipped with everything but pride.
So honor now is just another word,
A word that politicians used too long
While disregarding protests that were heard
And warnings that our course had proven wrong.
But had they listened then to what was said,
All fifty-thousand pawns would not be dead.
