RAT WEEK
Term I freshmen discovered the real joy of
being rats during their first week at L-SCC. Students
were "encouraged" either to wear their red,
white and blue beanies, signifying the low order of
rat, or chance being caught without them and face
the consequences. At the end of Rat Week, SGA
sponsored a cookout. Here students participated
in a watermelon seed-spitting contest, and Rat
· King and Queen were crowned.
HEALTH WEEK
Lake-Sumter has been very fortunate because for the past
three years the Health Committee, comprised of L-SCC
faculty and assisted by local medical personnel, has sponsored
a Health Fair for students, faculty, and staff. The Health
Fair was held at the beginning of Term I and offered various
screenings for blood pressure, di abetes, sickle cell anemia,
pulmonary functions, and many more.
At the end of the week Mr. Atlas, David Couch, and Miss
Venus, Kay Brantley, were chosen as the two healthiest students.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA
As a salute to America's 200th
birthday, the Student Government
and College Bicentennial Committee,
headed by Walter Bryde, dedicated
the flags of the thirteen
original colonies and the first official
national flag. As each flag was
recognized, a brief history was given
by students. This was followed by a
salute fired from a cannon.
senile couple's attempt to reminisce.
The second hit, "The Man in the Bowler Hat," was a British comedy based on the
unusual events that occur in a middle-aged couple's home.
As a special treat, Theater Arts held a Variety Show which was lots of fun and
laughter.
Ballad
The king sat upon his throne
Before his sages old.
"Who can find for me a prince
Who is strong and brave and bold?"
"I have a lovely daughter
Who needs to find her man
For soon she will be sixteen
But who should take her hand?"
"Across the sea there lives a prince
Who is so rich and brave
' Hundred slaves wait on him a day
But he's old, soon for the grave."
"Then all his princely treasure
Could be yours, 0 great sire.
Marry her to him today
And he'll die before he'll tire."
But the king's lovely daughter
Back from her lover young
Overheard and listened in
And then stuck out her tongue.
"Never shall I marry him
He's much too old for me.
I' ll go back to my love tonight
And together we shall flee ."
She met her love upon the moor
Their words of love were said
in the morn they found a church
And together they were wed.
The next day the king was sad
His girl could not be found
He searched his castle and his land
And found her ring upon the ground. ...,.
A year and a day he searched
Until he could search no more
He rode to a house for rest
And knocked upon the door
A pretty woman answered
With a baby in her arms
Her manner was familiar
And had so many charms.
T
Around her neck there hung a stone
That he had seen before.
He looked her in the eye and asked
"What did you leave home for?"
"I left home to be happy
With the man I love the best
On this land we' ve made our home
And inside we' ve made our nest."
The king held the baby child
And pressed it to his lip
Then he held his daughter close
And made his homeward trip.
Computer Error
John Quigley stamped out of the Bureau of Vehicle Registration
offices muttering invectives under his breath.
"What the hell," he asked himself, "are computers good for
anyway?" A sign across the street beckoned - Office Lounge.
Quigley crossed and made for the door.
"What'll it be?" the bartender asked, as Quigley settled
himself on the barstool. •
"Double shot - bourbon, and water back."
"Comin' up."
"Kinda slow today," Quigley observed, looking around.
"You're the first. We usually don't get much till
about eleven," replied the bartender as he placed the glasses
on the bar.
"You know," Quigley said, as he twirled the shot glass
in his hand, "computers are for the birds. I went over to
the registration office early to get my new plates. If you
don't go early you'll spend all day waitin' in line. Anyway,
when it comes my turn, I give the girl this form they sent
me, and guess what happens?"
"What?"
"She goes over to a file, pulls out a card, and comes
back - now get this!" he said, his voice changing to a falsetto
pitch. '"Sir"' he went on, trying to imitate the
clerk's voice, "our computer shows you as being deceased."
Gulping down his drink, he continued, his voice normal
again. "How about that! Here I am standing right smack in
front of her, and she says her computer says I'm dead."
"I'll be damned," the bartender said. "What did you
do?"
"Well, the funny part is, I couldn't do anything. She
said I was the second one it happened to today, and that
we'd both - (the other guy's name was Quinn, by the way)
have to wait till they made a correction and put the card
back through the computer. Tell you one thing! She better
get that computer straightened out, or I'll be talkin' to
someone who will!" he said emphatically.
"Don't blame yuu Mister - what did you say your name
was?"
"Didn't. But it's Quigley."
"Wait a minute!" the bartender said, an expression of
enlightenment coming over his face . "Hold on! Q-U-I
Quigley - Quinn. Your name and the other guy's both start
with Q-U-1. Maybe the computer goofed on everyone's name
that starts with Q-U-1."
"Never considered that," Quigley said. "No, sure
didn' t, but you could have something there." He laughed as
a thought entered his mind. "Maybe I should run down and
collect my insurance," he said, his earlier dark mood giving
way to one of jocularity. "I'll have another double."
The bartender laughed and placed the drink on the bar.
Just as Quigley was finishing his drink, the door opened and
a man rushed in brandishing a gun. His mouth twitched and
his nervousness was reflected in his jerky motions.
"Lay the bread on me, man" huasped. "Be quick
about it too. You," he motioned to Quigley, "out with the
wallet. Slide it here and be careful how you slide it. "
The bartender hit the "No sale" button and the register
clacked open. He scooped out the bills and started stacking
them on the bar, glancing only for the briefest moment at
the gun lying on top of the beer cooler, under the bar, only
inches from his hand.
Quigley pulled the wallet out of his pocket and very
cautiously stooped to slide it to the nervous robber. It
slid across the floor like a shuffleboard puck and stopped
at the man's feet. As the robber reached to pick it up, the
bartender shouted, "Stay down, mister!" Quickly snatching
the gun from the top of the cooler he fired over Quigley's
head. It was all in one smooth rapid motion. A small black
dot appeared as if from nowhere right in the center of the
dishevelled looking robber's forehead . He stood for a moment,
as if frozen , and then started to pitch forward. As he fell,
another cracking sound shattered the quiet.
Quigley rose slowly, his knuckles white as he clutched
the corner of the bar. "You okay?" the bartender asked in a
shaky voice. Quigley started to open his mouth, but no
sound came. The bartender looked in astonishment at the
spreading red stain on the front of the shirt, and then
Quigley slumped to the floor. The bartender scrambled over
the bar and gently pulled him to a sitting position. Quigley's
head rolled forward and his chin came to rest just over the
red stain. The bartender eased him back to the floor, then
walked slowly to the phone and dialed the police.
"Better send someone over right away - Office Lounge
a guy just tried to stick up the place and he and one of my
customers are dead. Both shot. I'll fill you in when you
get here. No, never saw either one of them before. The
customer's name is Quigley, though. The other guy? "Well,
he said grimly, "I think you're gonna find his name is Quinn.
How do I know?" He paused and his voice grew husky. "let's
just say a computer told me," and he hung up.
Dreams and Other Things
If days were stored in balloons,
dreams would be pointed needles
bursting life' s boredom.
If days were in the form of stagnant water,
dreams would be swift currents ·
transforming stillness into rapid action.
If m'mi is compa red to bees,
dreams are lightning bolts
that shatter hundreds of bees swarming.
Life without dreams
I Touched You
I touched yo u,
for one fleeting moment
my breath was inside yours,
and in that moment,
so far go ne now,
I stood aside yo u in comradeship.
I touched yo u,
yet now as I form these words
you are lost again ,
lost in the thickening fog
whose swirling winds sweep
your trail out towards infinity.
You were so small ,
as minute as my life,
yet yo u presented all
with the light of a thousand ages;
within the scope of a solitude thought,
You protected.
You warmed the void ,
you stood without
a nd yet within,
and pierced the dense lies
shrills of distant trains
lost in the heavy night.
Sunday in the Park
i stand on the brink of utter despair,
gazing down into the swirling void.
My shadow reflects a wasted life
shattered dreams; hope, a lost word.
The question in my head tears at sanity
- a hawkdevouring a white mouse.
Have i the strength, or shall i fail again?
Seeking comfort, my soul is alone in a nightmare.
Silence. Fear. Dread illusion.
i await the answer only i can give.
The clouds fade and the earth cries out
Animals greet the sun.
"Release!" i scream
The animals are silent, the sun disappears.
My nfind slithers out and encircles a flower,
caressing each petal.
i bec.ome a rock -
i am pebbles -
sand . .. .. .. .
. . . . i become a seed;
a flower.
i feel an insane being ki ss me.
i wither;
i die.
Naiad Creative Writing Contest
Requiem
The days when eyes were bright and hopes soared high
Are scuttled in a slough of broken dreams
Where fifty-thousand hearts were all pumped dry
In payment for an unsuccessful scheme.
With honor, pea\?e is what we sought in vain.
Through bluff we tried to stem a rising tide,
But armies that we sweated blood to train
Proved well equipped with everything but pride.
So honor now is just another word,
A word that politicians used too long
While disregarding protests that were heard
And warnings that our course had proven wrong.
But had they listened then to what was said,
All fifty-thousand pawns would not be dead.
Twilight Reflections
I sit and hug my knees against the air
-
Now cool, as finairays of light reach out
From melting sun to touch the earth, to share
A quiet moment free from care and dopbt.
The earth seems drowsy, drugged by hours of sun ,
All ready for the peaceful night to come.
Now pausing, slower - all the day's work done -
A treasured time of dreaming dreams for some.
And sitting here alone, I too can feel
A peace so gentle, pure, unfelt before,
Caused by the wind in rustling trees ...
so real
My mind will keep this place for evermore.
But still there's not the peace that there might be,
For I have no one sharing it with me.
Life
A child is born
Tiny and innocent,
Unaware of the world
Just as a flower bud opens
Tiny and innocent,
Unaware of the world.
A child grows up.
Large and full of life,
Yet still looking ahead.
Just as a flower grows
Larger and full of life
Yet still looking ahead.
The child becomes an adult
Full-grown and bewildered,
No longer anticipating life.
The flower has blossomed
Full-blown and bewildered,
No longer anticipating life.
The adult dies
Alone and unnoticed,
Returning to dust.
The blossom dies
Alone and unnoticed,
Returning to dust.
Insanity
The Patient One
I looked into the eyes
of death today,
Saw the clutching outstretched hand
and nimbly leapt away
But death only smiled,
a smile that seemed to say,
It matters not at all
what day.
Insanity: an Edgar Allan Poe satire, a yellow pond, a
telephone that rings and no one answers. Insanity is the feeling
when nothing goes right, or nothing goes wrong. Insanity
is that small degree of perfection that just shouldn't be.
Insanity is a child's imagination, a child's description
of things, even though the child is "normal."
Insanity is a word to describe me after a typical writing class.
