including the Rat's Cookout and the Rat
Dance, at which a Rat King and Queen
were crowned.
mother to clear away the dishes.
About a week after our bath house incident, I could tell
that these family discussions had reached a head and that
someone or something had to give. With an air of innocence,
I excused myself and went upstairs where I immediately
opened the air vent in my parents' room so that I could hear
good and clear.
"Mother, father, you know what I'm going to say to you
tonight. I've said the same thing for the past eight nights. I
believe I have a future as an actress and think I should be
allowed to go to New York City to find out. If you would just
loan me the damn fifty dollars, I could go and be ba ck before
we leave for home."
" Alison, honey, " my mother's voice sounded cool but
understanding, "there are a million other girls who are looking
for the same lucky break. You need connections to get
auditions and it takes more than fifty dollars to make those
connections. If you are really serious about an acting career
why don't you start with a drama class next semester, and if
you do well in it, well, perhaps then we can talk about a trip
to New York next summer. "
My father's roaring voice continued where my mother's
coolness left off, " Alison, what if something should happen
to you? How would we know where to get in touch with you,
and besides, you are too young to go to New York by yourself.
Have you lost your mind?"
That alone would have been enough to stop me but not
good old Alison.
" Oh, God, I want to be someone. I don't want to be like the
two of you . You spend nine months of the year at home discussing
father dear's crummy little business, watching Lawrence
Welk every Saturday night, and never going to bed
after 10:35. The other three months you spend cooped up in
the sticks of Maine. I will be someone and nothing either of
you can say or do will stop me."
Not wanting to miss the actress in action, I jumped up so
quickly that the thread bare oriental rug skidded .out from
under my feet, causing me to tumble head first over a trunk
of musty army blankets. Wincing with pain, l held my
bruised appendage with one hand and bobbled ' down the
spiraling stairs just in time to see Alison grab the milk glass
fruit bowl off the formica table and wing it at the faded paper
on the kitchen wall still mumbling something about making
it to the top and not wasting her kind of talent on Deerfield
High School. A more dramatic exit Scarlet 0 ' Hara, herself,
could not have made.
If I doubted Alison's acting ability before, this little fiasco
had made a believer out of me. I guess my parents kind of
saw it that way· too because the next morning we put Alison
on the 8:45 Greyhound bus - destination, New York, New
York. And in sort of a dumb way I hoped the kid would make
it.
During the week and a half she was gone, I spent a lot of
time thinking about her, often recapping her dramatic debut
at 111 Beach Street, Bar Harbor, Maine. If I hadn't understood
anything else she had said, I certainly knew what she
under blond, bushy eyebrows. Those eyes belied the con·
stant threat of his hellish personality which was much like a
loaded and cocked cannon, always ready to explode at the
slightest provocation. As one could expect, his personality
was instrumental in his eventual demise.
Stud was a natty dresser for the times and the area. He
had spent some time in New Orleans prior to his arrival in
North Florida, and while in New Orleans he had commis·
sioned a tailor to keep him supplied with fine clothing. Along
with being a natty dresser, Stud wifS almost always well
groomed. He even bathed quite frequently, which was
almost unheard of during that period. Of course, all of these
attributes wrapped up in the package that was Stud Seven
captured the attention of the ladies.
The high point in Mr. Seven 's life came during the days
immediately preceding Florida 's statehood. Already a terri
tory with statehood imminent, Florida had friends and foes
alike; those that were for and those that were against state
hood . Stud was an outspoken advocate for statehood, and it
was through his zealous campaigning that the original Flo
rida Constitutional Convention was held in Port St. Joe.
Stud 's chief adversary was a former sea captain, William
Panton. Panton owned and operated a trading post just east
of Pensacola along the Spanish Trail. It was because of his
trading post business that Panton was intensely against Flo
rida becoming a state. He visualized and abhorred the loss
of revenue that he would suffer due to the traditional taxa
tion associated with statehood.
Stud ' s last campaign foray ended in Panton's trading post
saloon . He had completed his stumping for the day in wh ich
he bitterly attacked the unpatriotic, obdurate oafs that were
so against the statehood cause. He was relaxing over a tan
kard of beer with some friends when an enraged Panton
approached him. Sensing the danger in Panton, Stud turned
to his friends in an attempt to solicit support only to find that
they were excusing themselves and leaving him alone. It was
almost as if Stud had been set up. The only ally that he had
was himself in his ability to talk persuasively.
The brawny ex-sea captain impetuously seated himself
across from Stud in one of the recently vacated chairs. Th is
alone was provocation enough for most men· to retal iate in
some way or another. However, Stud realized that hi s posi
tion, size against size, was untenable. He knew that he
would have to rely on his persuasive ability.
He attempted to engage Panton in a congenial conversa
tion. This futile attempt was received by Panton as a sign of
weakness . .Panton knew that he held the upper hand, and he
began to press his advantage. He berated Stud for all of the
things that Stud had said during his campaigning that day.
Of course the more Panton attacked him, the less inclined
Stud was to be persuasive. In fact, his diminutive size was
overcome by the anger that he felt. This, much to Panton 's
surprise, quickly resulted in the slap of the challenge.
The challenge was readi-ly accepted by Panton, and the
duel was arranged to take place immediately in the saloon.
Seconds and .44 caliber pistols were quickly selected for
each of them. The duel was conducted with all of the tradi
tional trappings. Each of the duelists knew the possible
results; yet, each in the heat of anger did not care.
Stud Seven was mortally wounded in that duel. That was
1838, one brief year before the Constitutional Convention
adopted the state constitution and seven years before Con
gress admitted Florida to the Union.
A distant point glimmering alone,
A point, to me, that's never shown
Its lovely scarlet spark.
The twerdling of a dozen birds,
Whose whisper echoes anxious words
Of night's receding dark.
The stratum glides across the sky,
Taking shapes before my eye
Obscuring and revealing.
And now beginning in gradual phases,
The misty purple curtain raises
Its color cool, appea ling.
That distant point, some planet far,
Outlasts the brightest midnight star
Its sca rlet fading to white.
And now in shades of peaceful gray,
The bi rds and clouds await new day
And calmly fades the night.
A warmer glow and speedier cloud
Help blow away the sl umber shroud
And bid the world, Awaken I
The birds seem now a score or more,
Their trillings glide and dip and soar
And morning sleep is shaken.
Thomas the tailor was normally a meek, quiet little fellow,
but the news he had just heard was more than he could
stand. He paced back and forth across the shop floor. "Oh
my! Oh my! Whatever shall I do?" he cried, pushing his
glasses back from the tip of his nose, where they had
bounced. Such agitation was not normal for Thomas. After
all, this was the eleventh century, not some backward era.
Certainly, taxes were at an all time high, but his wants were
modest. Could any mortal survive this? Could he? .
He glanced out the shop window, moaned, and pulled the
shutters tightly together. " Can I? Should I? Will I do it?" he
groaned, remembering the many nights he had tossed in
dreams. What dreams they were! "Is it possible she will
really do as the Sheriff sa id?"
Hearing a commotion outside, he ran to the shutters,
slinging tools aside, and nearly tripped over a stool. Resetting
his glasses again, he peered outside. "The streets are
clearing, and the people are going inside. She really will do
on his forehead. He closed the shutters gently and breathed
with a sigh, "I musn't, I shan't, I coundn't."
The sound of horses' hooves struck his ears, causing
larger beads to cross his forehead . As the sound
approached the front of his store, the strain became too
great. Running to the window, he cracked open the shutters,
peeped out, and there she was, The Lady, herself, riding a
horse, naked : She was naked, not the horse- although, the
horse wasn 't wearing much either. With a jiggle here and a
bounce, bounce there, all of Thomas' dreams came true. His
glasses steamed and'1iis palms grew sweaty, as he cried,
"What a beauty! What a form! What a body!"
Hearing this, The Lady turned, saw him, and being a modest
lady, covered her mouth. He heard her exclamation as
she galloped out of sight, " My goodness, a peeping
Higher Education
George is a young alligator who lives in the pond on the
school campus. He lives a lonely life beca use no other alliga·
tors inhabit the pond. He was bored with lazing around all
day. He could remember how his mother had stressed that
to get the most out of life, you had to attend school and
become educated. So George decided it was time for him to
obtain a better education. He wanted to learn more about
those weird land creatures.
George knew he had not been in the military service, and
he would not be able to get help from the Veteran 's Administration.
His father was deceased, but he had only been
engaged in alligator labor in his lifetime. Thus, poor George
would not be eligible for Social Security benefits. He didn't
think he could get a grant from the government, but he was
determined he was going to become an educated alligator.
He did a lot of thinking, and he observed activities going
on around the campus. Eventually he came up with an idea
which would make it possible for him to have private lessons
from several teachers.
Monday through. Friday at midday, George floated across
the pond and took a position by the bank. He patiently
waited for his tea

At times it looked like the two bodies were fused into one.
Their eating habits completely dumbfounded George. Two
heads would come together and they would make slurpping
noises. George could not see any food or any space for it to
get"'into their mouths, b•..!t just listening to all the commotions
made him drool. George surmised they were slow eaters.
He could have caught two dozen fish and have eaten
them within the length of time they mai f!:tained their eating
position.
George could not find the answers to all of his problems.
Alligators only have one color, but silly land creatures come
in a variety of colors. It appeared to George that they could
grow a different colored hide overnight. George tried sunning
himself as part of his homework, but he was unable to
obtain a beautiful red or polka dot blue hide.
George was bewildered by the long fur that covered some
of the creatures' heads and faces, whereas others had big,
round shiny balls with no fur at all. He thought he might look
good with long blonde fur. However, the slick ball type did
not appeal to him. He preferred his own delicately shaped
head.
It was interesting to discover land critters came in all sizes
and shapes. Each day as George watched he could see tall,
short, fat and skinny ones. Some of them had odd colored
monster eyes. George avoided looking at these. They were
too frightening for a timid alligator, and he was afraid they
might give him nightmares.
George was fascinated by the animals with peculiar metal
teeth . If he studied hard enough, maybe he could learn how
to grow teeth of metal. He visualized clamping down on a
fish with his big silver teeth .
A number of the creepy varmints were wandering around
with smoke pouring out of openings in their heads. George
thought this was ridiculous. He had been on the shore one
evening when the grass had caught on fire. The smoke had
almost suffocated him. He had the impression that he might
be allergic to smoke, and decided to drop out of that class.
George completed his first week of school with a feeling of
accomplishment. He planned to relax on the beach for the
weekend . He could browse around in the sun, work on his
homework, and also observe more of those goofy land creatures.
