Temporary facilities were established in Leesburg in shell homes placed adjacent to the high school. The six pre-fabricated houses were leased to the college for $1.00 per year by six Leesburg businessmen: Byron Herlong, Bill Floyd. Brunson Gibson, Carlisle Rogers, G. G. Ware and J. A. Boyd, Jr. In addition, three portable buildings were furnished by the Lake County Board of Public Instruction, On September 8, 1962, the doors of the college were opened and classes began. The first faculty was comprised of seventeen full-time professtxs and numerous part-time in- structors. One hundred thirty-seven day students participated in the first semester of opm ation. In addition, two hundred twenty-five persons enrolled in evening division courses which indicated the excellent reception of the institution by adults in the two county area. The selection of a permanent college sire located four miles east of Leesbmg on U. S. 441 has been accomplished. This 73 acre site has approximately 1,000 feer of lakefront on beautiful Silver Lake. Five permanent buildings in the first phase of construction ase to be completed for occupancy by January 1965.
Dr. Williams presents gavel to Tom Flegal, acting Student Council president, officially inducting Student Executive Committee into office. Buying books, making new friends -- some of the many activities those first days at Lake-Sumter. Student Executive Committee Inducted - The first assembly elected Sally Grizzard social chairman, and Tim Hatfield chairman of all organiza- tions. Tim Hatfield, Col. Wirak, and I. L. LaRue were among those who worked so hard drafting a constitution for the college. The research committee studied ways and means of helping the executive committee 1 and the student assembly promote the general welfare of L-S students.
