Lake-Sumter Junior College
Proudly Presents the
First Edition
of the
College Yearbook

FOREWORD
We, the members of the yearbook staff, proudly present the fist edition of The Naiad.
Having no traditions to follow, we have attempted to present Lake-Surnter Junior College as it has grown from
an idea into reality.
Despite our compact, temporary facilities, the true college spirit has prevailed; that spirit of learning which
trains future leaders and challenges all who enroll has been evident in both instructors and students.
Soon the permanent campus will be completed, but we here now will have had the honor of knowing that we
were the pioneers of this institution.

According to classical mythology, a naiad was a
water nymph.who dwelt in and presided over foun-
tains, brooks, rivers, and lakes. Since our permanent
campus will be near Silver Lake, the naiad seems a
fitting symbol for our yearbook.
DEDICATION
In January of 1962, Dr. Williams, then living in Naples, Florida, was hired to come to this area to be president
of a junior college which exisied only onpaper. With the aid of local interested citizens, he was able to trans-
form the plans from the paper into classrooms, teachers and students. We who are taking advantage of this won-
derful opportunity are greatly indebted toDr.Williams for the role of leadership which he assumed. In no small
measure this leadership has taken us from thecollege on paper to a temporary plant and now to plans for a per-
manent campus.
It is with great devotion and admiration thatwe proudly dedicate Lake-Sumter's first yearbook to our president.
Dr. Paul P. Williams.

Only words of praise are due our college
Advisory Committee who have worked so
diligently in making the dream of a Junior
College in our community a reality. We
are fortunate in having such a willing group
who have given so freely of their time and
effort that we may have the proper founda-
tion for this institution. Our thanks to these
men and women who have given that we
might receive.
Chairman, Howard Kurfiss, is proud to hear of the
interest shown by the students in their college.

FROM THE
PRESIDENT - I
i
This is the first yearbook published for and
by the students of Lake-Sumter. In its
pages you and I can relive the college year
and recall the activities that have been important
and worthwhile.
It should be remembered that students have
an impact on educational institutions just
as surely as colleges influence students.
Thus, this is your story and your college.
Education is not only a condition of the
mind. It is also an attitude toward life.
The yearbook staff has ably captured these
attitudes in picture and verse. Congratula
tions to all who have made this publicatior
a reality.
DEAN'S MESSAGE
As we complete our second year at Lake-Sumter Junior Col-
lege, we pause to reflect on the accomplishments made by
the faculty and student body in our first two years.
The faculty has achieved the enviable reputation of high
quality teaching with a sympathetic understanding of student
problems. Faculty members are interested primarily in the
welfare of students, and have given much of their time in
challenging students to think for themselves in their quest
for knowledge.
The student body has developed a remarkable school spirit,
and the student government organization has accepted a
leadership role in working with the faculty and adminis-
tration to establish a friendly atmosphere on campus.
The staff is to be cmmended for this excellent issue of the
Naiad, and for its part in telling the story of Lake-Surnter's
progress. Congratulations for a job well done!

COUNSELING services are available to all
students through the Office of Student
Personnel. The counselor's main role is
to contribute to the student's own self-
understanding and growth. The counselor
attempts to give the student, during his
college life, the necessary assistance that
will sustain him in accordance with his
specific need. These needs are met in
accordance with the individual's unique
abilities, interests, aptitudes and personal
preferences.
GUIDANCE services assist the student to gain
self-understanding as a basis for meeting his needs,
solving his problems, and aiding his develop-
ment as a mature responsible member of society.
h Jaaudlfy of 1962 Dr. Paul P. Williams was selected from forty applicants to beoome
Temporary facilities were established in Leesburg in shell homes placed adjacent to the
high school. The six pre-fabricated houses were leased to the college for $1.00 per year
by six Leesburg businessmen: Byron Herlong, Bill Floyd. Brunson Gibson, Carlisle Rogers,
G. G. Ware and J. A. Boyd, Jr. In addition, three portable buildings were furnished by
the Lake County Board of Public Instruction,
On September 8, 1962, the doors of the college were opened and classes began. The
first faculty was comprised of seventeen full-time professtxs and numerous part-time in-
structors. One hundred thirty-seven day students participated in the first semester of opm
ation. In addition, two hundred twenty-five persons enrolled in evening division courses
which indicated the excellent reception of the institution by adults in the two county area.
The selection of a permanent college sire located four miles east of Leesbmg on U. S.
441 has been accomplished. This 73 acre site has approximately 1,000 feer of lakefront on
beautiful Silver Lake. Five permanent buildings in the first phase of construction ase to be
completed for occupancy by January 1965.

Student Executive Committee Inducted -
The first assembly elected Sally
Grizzard social chairman, and Tim
Hatfield chairman of all organiza-
tions.
Tim Hatfield, Col. Wirak, and I. L. LaRue
were among those who worked so hard drafting
a constitution for the college.
The research committee studied ways and
means of helping the executive committee 1
and the student assembly promote the general
welfare of L-S students.

"Green- Up Day"
The college project to beautify the temporary campus was a
big success. Students and faculty alike turned out to till the
soil for the plants donated by various nurseries, students, and
other persons of our area. Plans for a diagonal pattern of
walks were drawn up by a local architect, and paved walks
were furnished by Lake County.
Professor Philips and student, Ozni Cornwell, work
Finding classes that first year wasn't always the
easiest thing to do. One might find a Physical
Education class down at the city pool, another at
the high school, a music class at the First Christ-
ian Church or maybe even an English class at the
home of one of the instructors. Nevertheless, a
strong school spirit prevailed, and it was great
being a college Freshman.
Two hundred twenty-five adults enrolled in the evening courses to take advantage of
the training program for community betterment and cultural enrichment.

TO THE STUDENTS OF LAKE-SUMTER:
It has been our purpose this year to publish a yearbook that will be-
come a most cherished possession of each of you. It is our hope
that this first edition will be only one in a long line of good student
publications produced for our college.
We are a college still in our infancy with many inconveniences, but
this has made no difference because we have received exactly what
we came for - knowledge, which was given abundantly by our pro-
fessors.
Soon the permanent campus will be completed and "our campus, "
the little pre-fabricated houses, will be removed, but nothing can
ever erase the memories we have or the friends we have made here.
I believe the feeling each graduate has in his heart for the college
can be summed up in the words of the following song:
